Sega Coil Strengths - is there a chart or information

I just bought a Baywatch and can't hit the tower ramp so first thing I thought I would check the coil types to determine any mods / incorrect coils installed. I also have the coil power turned up to the max and still can't do the tower ramp.

left bottom flipper is meant to be a 090-5030-00 (23-1100) but is a 090-5032-00

right bottom flipper is meant to have a 090-5020-30 (23-900) but is a 090-5032-00 but is physically much bigger and not original

upper left flipper (rescue buoy thing) is meant to have a 090-5025-00 (24-1570) but is a 090-5030-00

upper left flipper (shark fin) is meant to have a 090-5030-00 (23-1100) and is a 090-5030-00 = a correct one


So I have 1 out of 4 with the right coil installed in the right place but all the others are different - how do I tell what is a stronger or weaker coil installed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your factory manual will have a listing for each n every coil and its correct part number. They are usually listed in a Sega manual in the first dozen pages, and usually 2 x pages is devoted to every coil n part number for a Sega.
Also, make sure you rebuild the flipper kits and buy the right buschs as well, level the machine to the correct slope, also in your games manual, and u shld be fine.
If I find any coils have been replaced with different ones, I always replace them with the exact ones from the Sega catalogue.

Alot of people replace them with data east or williams ones because thats what they have on them when they do a hack repair, but going back to the exact part number listed in your games manual is the answer.   Dont try n substitute with other brands cause u will just play around forever and never get it rioght.

I noticed that it states the coils on mine to have a diode what will still have to check on the manual but last night noticed no diodes at all on the flipper coils.

Should re-install these.

Another good thing is it shows what williams and bally coils can be substituted for the Sega ones as have a few new bally/WMS ones.

I have been slightly busy totally changing the shed around to gear up (finally) for so pinball work in the near future - been hectic lately to say the least.

I have been tallying up a bit of a parts list and just got a full plastics set and rubber set from Bay Amusements - super fast freight.

I need to replace 2 coils and just doing a order soon (first stop RTBB hopefully), but for all the flipper coils they currently have had the diodes removed (manual shows them installed) - how does this affect the game / flipper action?
Also I have jaycar diodes which are the same as the Bally/WMS 1N4007, but Sega specify IN4004 diodes, should I go for exact or will the 1N4007 be fine as they are rated 1000v 1A?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Yes my ramp was cracked but lucky at only a couple of the mounting points but where yours is cracked I think I will make a SS cliffy type protector to lay in the curve. It is a fun player, and I think alot of people are turned off by the Hoff on the translite and possibly the high cut swimmers on the cabinet. On ebay i found a guy that does alternative translites and he has a Pam one definitley not fam friendly, but I asked him if he could consider doing a no Hoff one close to what is in there or just a beach scene with the life guard tower and some waves and girls in the distance - basically a little less chessy and a little more family friendly - his answer was keep a watch out and he will see what he can do.
Also bought a US coast guard helicopter and a shark for the playfield to mod it a little and will try some stern blades in it to see if they fit, otherwise the playfield is in pretty good condition just needs rubbers and plastics as well as someone put sponge behind every target so will fix all those care of RTBB parts.

The 1N400X series are all 1A diodes and are upwards compatible.

Meaning if the unit has a 1N4002 or a 1N4004 in it anything HIGHER is fine IE: 1N4007

I don't even bother stocking anything other than 1N4007 any more. In the olden days there was a significant price difference between them but not any more.

I would certainly fit a diode to EVERY coil confirming the banded end is installed facing the +ve power feed to the coil. I would say there are very few (if any) situations where a diode should NOT be installed.

Even in games where the diode is actually installed on the PCB itself I would still fit a diode to the coil - it can't do any harm at all and is good insurance. It also prevents spurious spikes from running all through the wiring harness.

Look forward to seeing how the mods turn out and also be very interested to see what you come up with for the subway ramp.

I've also seen "modesty decals" on ebay which cover the girls on the side a bit better.

Speaking of modesty,  the game also has a setting to turn on/off a certain feature at the match stage after a game.

Btw, would you happen to have the old plastic that sits behind the drop targets?  I'd be interested, as mine has an incorrect plastic here.

- when I get time when I do the playfield shop I will look at the ramp cliffy and if it works I will do a few and send one your way to test (but honesty that will be a few months as got a 6 week old and been busy)
- I haven't seen the modesty decals but I did read on pinside a little while that when the pins were produced one country wanted the design to be more covered up so the girls were like shorts so Sega did a run of these for that country - don't know how true this is but a few people had that cabinet design
- yeah worked out the modesty setting and adjusted - my  3 1/2 yr old little girl loves playing the game and mainly the shark so I just wanted to tame it down.
- I am pretty sure I have a plastic there and sure it is undamaged so as long as if my new kit there is a replacement I am sure I can help you out there

I checked the bag of plastics and learnt that the set is incomplete at 32 plastics of 34 and checked the website and missed that tiny detail - bad luck would have it that the drop target plastic is not part of the set.

But when I do the shopout I will remove it and scan and can send you a copy of the scanned plastic if you want it.

Finally order a few coils off RTBB for this so will get on to it eventually.
