theatre of magic switching off problem

Has happened twice in as many weeks. This last was during multi ball and while the balls were hitting heaps of stuff the game turned off. No lights, no screen until it powered up again. So you could say it resetted.

My question is do you guys think the problem could be something shorting out ie. A target that might have been hit during multi ball or should I be looking at the known culprits, connectors and bridge rectifiers? I just thought with the mayhem of multi ball, there might be a switch, target, etc that might be the cause

I had the same thing happen to my Williams Getaway HP2, mine would re set if the balls where in the supercharger and both flippers energized.
Wiggled the J10 connector on the driver board (top right) and that fixed it for a time but it came back.
I had the pins replace at J10 and one of the big black caps replaced and the problem went away.

Lift the glass off, go into multiball mode by finger-triggering the appropriate switch/target to go into multiball mode, then finger each of the targets & switches until you can re-create the fault of shutting down, you MIGHT also have to press multiple targets at once to simulate multi-balls hitting them to try and find what triggers the shutdown.

Besides the above, just run anormal game, and finger every target/switch to see if 1 switch alone is causing the short/shutdown......it may (or may not) be unique to multiball mode...

This...the machine is drawing too much power during the multiball mode dropping it below the minimum for the power driver board to operate or the current going in must be only just above the minimum.

In addition to the above, plug the machine directly into the wall socket, without using an extension cord and don't have any other appliance sharing the same line.

   Grab your multi meter and check the voltage on your CPU one terminal on each side of the capacitor near the power plug.  Should be above 4.8v. If you have some alligator clips clip your multimeter on and watch the voltage when you get into multivalve if te voltage is dropping below 4.8 that's why it's resetting

Forgot to mention to check the 5v on the driver board there will be a test point on the left half if its 5v and the capacitor is 4.8 check the two connectors next to each other between the CPU and the driver board

it will be a connector problem or a faulty 5 volt reg

thanks for all the suggestions. I'm leaning towards a connector but haven't had the chance to look. I recall my TZ resetting and that was a connector, now just got to figure out which one it was. I also think I installed the Rottendog driver board as it wouldn't work with my T2. So bad components by rights shouldn't be the case although not totally out of the question.

will update if I'm still no closer to the cause. thanks

had a quick look and reseated the two connectors that may have been the ones that caused the problem on my TZ. I think J101 was the cause but maybe it was J102. Both these connector probably need updating to molex to bullet proof my problem. I will try to do this and get with the results.
