Gottlieb Time Line
« on: February 11, 2010, 11:25:16 PM »
Hi everyone,
Very much a noob here.
I have recently become the proud owner of a Gottlieb Time Line machine.
To give you all a quick run down i have been eager to try a pinball reno for a long time and this one came along at the right price.
It was very unloved mylar lifting on the playfield and some very poor prior repairs on the driver board looking at it i didn't really hold out much hope for it but a few transistors and reset coil and it sort of worked.
Some things were still a little random so i went over the grounds and it improved heaps. In fact playable.
My problem now is the sound doesn't work so i replaced the speaker it now plays a tune when the test button is pushed. And will play every few minutes.
My problem is this the sound doesn't play while the game is playing and i noticed the rom that it should have as listed on the board is shown as a 659 but the rom chip in the sound card looks like a 653. I can't understand why it would of been changed.
Could anyone tell me where i could get a Rom chip to suit?
Does anyone have or point me in the direction of a manual?

I'm sure you guys get asked these sorts of questions a lot so hopefully some one can help.
I really am having a ball doing this although a little frustrating.

Thanks heaps
Wally

 $.$ Wally and  %)% to AP !

Timeline = Great machine.

Your sound problem could be the fact that the sound board is from another machine.

You should start here - http://www.pinrepair.com/sys80/index.htm - Just for some background. On page 1 - "Gamelist"

#659 = Timeline
#53 = Spiderman

So there's a start ! Manuals are available from here - www.pbresource.com

Noticed an amendment to the manual "Must be off" in relation to the sound board switch S1 (I've attached that page here).

Email me for more info.

Hi guys i've done a bit more work today on the sound problem.
Put a socket on Z13 on the driver board replaced the 7404 also replaced U7 on the sound card and now i have some sound for a little while. after starting the game and the sound working it then stops.
if i ground S1 pin 2 of Z13 repeatedly i get a sound if i ground S2 pin 4 i get sound if i ground S4 pin 6 i get sound and i can ground these pins in any order and it works fine if i ground S8 at pin 8 it works once and no other sound will work until reset or powered off.

I do need to replace the caps on this board they all look sad but enough for tonight i'll have another think about it and get back to it another time.
The Rom is a 653 so sound card is obviously from a different game

cheers thanks for your help i'll keep you guys updated.

Good to hear, Wally - Post some pics of the machine when you get time. I usually Ground the Sound boards on SYS80s even though it is not covered in Clay's guide.

Hi guys think i've tracked down the problem.
There is a 555 timer on the board that resets U1 and U2 it looks as though it is set up in astable mode and should be running along happily switching its not running at all so i replaced the 555. No go
I'll replace the caps next but i don't have any spare 0.1 uF 100v polyesters handy.
I was however able to trigger the 555 by grounding pin 2 and then able to watch the reset line change state and then able to play sounds again.
So off to Jaycar i go.

Cheers
Wally

Umm think i got this all wrong the 555 is just a one shot to reset u2 and u3 on power up?
Is this right?
Oh well i'll keep going and check some other things.
