Heat Wave (Williams 1964)
« on: December 05, 2010, 08:10:28 AM »
A few years ago, a friend suggested that I get a game that was as old as myself.
Well, 1964 is almost 1966 ;)

My latest game, Heat Wave (Williams 1964)

Not only is this the oldest game I own, it is also the oldest game I have ever played

There is a lot that I like about this game;
Good looking backglass
Playfield full of targets, rollovers and pop bumpers
Always wanted a game that had a ball lifter to put the ball into play
Slightly different flipper location

After getting the game home, clearing some space and setting it up, a slight hiccup and I have it powered up and sorta working

The good;
GI works
Relays work
Motors all run
Flippers work
Plastics all seem solid (one crack)

The bad;
Power is not getting to the GI in the backbox
Not scoring
A few wear spots on the lower playfield
Large art patch-up on the upper playfield

Let the restoration begin :D

Great looking mid 60's WMS machine Pete... i REALLY like the "upside down "wedgehead that WMS made around this time... is a great look.
The game will play pretty fast, WMS made all other machines of this era look like plodders. It was at this time that WMS experimented with the plasticoat playfields... my PALOOKA ( also 64) had this and the PF was in exceptional shape.
Awesome machine.. will be a ton of fun.. especially with the pop bumpers in that configuration... I REALLY LIKE!!!!!

... just looked her up on IPDB... BG animation and swinging targets!!

Yeah, the goal is to raise the temperature of the thermometer
The higher it is, the higher the score is when you hit the drop target

Hmmmm, swinging targets
They are both controlled by the one motor

Looks in pretty good condition for a machine of that age.

Nice pickup!

I love these old games with the animated backglass.  And watch your friends look like dicks when no ball spits out. (umm I think it's broken)  %.%

Great looking game  ^^^

Sounds like you will be keeping this one .
I can't remember ever playing a game with swinging targets.
Good chance the backglass G1 and not scoring is due to dirty jones plugs in the backbox . I'd try cleaning them up with some wet and dry .

looking forward to watching the resto on this one .
I need more room ! and more $$$

This is a classic title and as Gav said - it will play fast. There's a lot to like about this title !

No scoring or backglass GI could be the connectors.

When you say "no scoring" - is it playable (but just does not score) ?

I am sure something just needs cleaning
I will recheck the fuses, clean the connectors, fiddle with the relays

I saw that at a Bumper Auction years ago
They had a room with some very nicely restored games
The game similar to mine people were looking at, but then walking away
Game was on, but nobody else seemed to know about ball lifting plungers

Felt good to know a bit more than every one else :D

I like the two moving targets to the sides, makes it look very interesting, not sure how they are used in gameplay but I suspect they're fun anyway!
