Windows 7 mail.
« on: June 07, 2010, 12:47:12 AM »
Anyone using windows 7 found a way to use windows mail on it yet?
Just cranked this new machine up (i7 seems real fast!)
only got some windows live mail program.
Googled and found out there are ways to run OE or W Mail,
but they look a little complicated to me.
Anyone found a work around?
Cheers

I'm using Win 7 64 Bit on my new pc. I've got Office 2007 with Outlook and it is crap. I will be moving back to Mozilla Thunderbird, but you have to use a 32 bit client as there is no 64 bit client yet.

I've used Thunderbird for years and I think it is the best email program around. Your ISP should have a guide on their support page to configure your email client.

 Likewise I'm running Win7 64bit.

I installed the Live mail application (not the web based one) and it works very well.  I pop about 6 different emails with it and it intergrates with virus software very well.

Think I need to read a bit more...
I thought the live mail was web based.
Must have looked at it wrong.
Martyj, it seems you still have to create a 'live' account? or am I looking in the wrong place.

I will have to double check when I get home, but I think the pre-installer is already on your version of Win7.

If not, google search for Windows Live Essentials.

You will need to download the application live mail.

 $#$
Update. I finally found what I was looking for, apparently windows mail is in windows 7.
Just not operative.
I used the info in this link:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic137494.html

and lo and behold, we have windows mail up and running!
Don't normally like to fiddle with the registry but seeing as I have a new system there is nothing to lose.
Will report back if I have problems.
Thanks for the input.

I'm also on W7 x64 ultimate. Loaded up Thunderbird and it works OK for me. I ran Office 2007 for about 10 days then got Office 2010 through a deal at work, so loaded it up. OL 2010 seems like it has a learning curve, but I'll be OK.

I've always used whatever mail client I like set up as IMAP, and then just archived with Outlook. Seems like a backwards process now, the more I think about it.
