backglass fitting
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:23:26 AM »
Hi all,
Just wondering if there should be some "slack" above the backglass when it is fitted into the machine.
Again, its the Gorgar Williams 79.
What is happening is when the glass is locked in, the two bars that go over it git extremely snugly, so much so that the glass is pinned to the bottom of the lightbox.
Question is, is there a danger of the glass breaking with flex in the lightbox when it is being played?
Should there be a little bit of play, ie: be able to lift it a couple of mill even though it is locked in?
All my other machines are like this.
If this is the case what the hell is making it so tight?
There is nothing in the track at the bottom and the lock mechanism seems OK.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks.

My gorgar as tight when locked but I have found that if the headbox is bolted on out of square you can't lock the bsckglass

Thanks Daniel,
Out of square, as in uneven bolt tensions I assume.
You don't mean out of square in relation to the cabinet.
Will investgate as it went on OK before I tightened the backbox.
Cheers,
Lindsay

My Timewarp backglass nearly dropped out and smashed on me once.
When I checked the locator groove at the bottom of the glass, the previous owners had let broken fuse glass fill up the groove in the headbox and the glass wasn't sitting in there properly.
I caught it just in time, but I nearly cacked my pants.

Solved, sort of.
Found that the actual backbox was a little 'wonky' and when it was pushed back the glass locked in OK
So fixed that, but it still locks that backglass in pretty tight.
Just hoping it isn't too tight, would hate to break the glass.
Hopefully its AOK.
Thanks for your input fellas
