Sprayed - as far as I know.

The stencils were actually made of brass or copper, leant against the white cabinet, and then sprayed. It was a very quick process. Later on down the production line, the second stencil was applied and the next color was sprayed.

The machines were on their backs, on the conveyor belt and the stencil was suspended.
