game keeps resetting
« on: November 28, 2010, 07:18:00 PM »
Got a Bally 'Strikes and Spares'. I just got it going again today. Have been playing it with my son and it was all good. I put in Alltek boards, MPU & Solenoid (wow, aren't they great), rebuilt Rectifier board (my first circuit board effort  $#$). We've had 20 - 30 games on it, no problems.
I put a new slingshot kicker head on.........and now it wants to restart all the time at random times.
I have checked all the tilt switches, they are all good.
Anyone have some ideas where I should start looking please???
Cheers
Bruce

I'd be Checking the plugs on the boards re seat them and see if that helps if it does I re pin the plugs

+1

Start a game and wiggle each connector on the MPU and Solenoid Driver.

I had resetting issues with my Bally Skateball.  It usually occurred when the flippers were activated.  In the Skateball, there are 4 flippers, and leaf switches on the bottom two flippers close when the bottom flippers are up, and this then provides the power for the upper flippers.  I noticed on mine that these switches needed adjusting, as the upper flippers would flicker due to the lower leaf switches not "contacting well" when the lower flippers were activated.  After adjusting these leaf switches, no more reset problems.

In your case you do not have this situation, but I believe what happened in my case, and may happening in yours, is some power surge.  Does the reset occur when a solenoid has just been activated, or is it at any time?  There are other reset triggers - the Alltek boards desire a very smooth 5.0V, and the capacitor C23 (on the SD board) needs to have low AC (less than 250mV) on it.  My Skateball's C23 is hovering around 200mV, and I should replace it.

There's also the coil diodes to check (this may be worth it if it is resetting during solenoid action).

Have a read in the section "Game Reset or Lockup Power Problems" in this link http://www.pinrepair.com/bally/index3.htm#reset .... quite a few things to look for.

All fixed guys. Thank you very much. It was the plugs. I tried wiggling them, but it wouldn't reset.
I then removed all the plugs and reseated them again.......all good.
Now was it the MPU or SDB plugs ???
Oh well, may just have to re-pin them all. :lol
Thanks mates
Cheers $&&

Good to see that you got it going ^^^

As has already been mentioned, you might want to think seriously about repinning the plugs, that way you'll have no more problems for a very long time, i know its a pain in the arse to do, but it really is the only sure fire way to ensure there are no more freeze ups/resets.

And yes the Alltek boards really are great things, i have two Alltek MPU boards, one in my Stern stingray, the other is a spare that i use to diagnose bally/stern games. Actually i just reminded myself... i must get my spare Alltek back, a mate of mine has it in his Power Play using it while i was repairing its original mpu!!

Most likely J4 on the MPU or J3 on the SD. Problem won't go away until the exact connector / pins are replaced. Could be fine for a week, a month or what usually happens is it works 100% until the day before a big party or meet   *!@

Will re pin them all. As Nino says, it will only play up again when your mates are here or at any other bad time (murphy's law).
Best stock up on some parts.
I haven't had this machine going for such a long time, it was my first pinny. I'm really enjoying it, laughing all the way. $#$
Cheers again ^^^
