No key for back box for a Bally Globe Trotters
« on: February 04, 2011, 10:50:09 PM »
Hi guys

Any one have any tricks to open a back box as I just picked up a well used Bally Globe Trotters pinball yesterday. I have never had a pinball of this era (late 70's Bally) and do not know what is inside the box in this area and do not want to damage anything.

Cheers

Best way might be to drill out the lock and then get a replacement lock with key from pinball spare parts.

Before you drill - the key might be inside the machine. Check inside the front door and around the area of the leg bolt plates.

Might sound a bit stupid, but I've drilled out the headbox lock, only to find the key floating around the lower cabinet. Check the corners amongst the dust and dirt.

In an emergency situation where a drill wasn't available I have used a screwdriver in the lock and a shifter on the screwdriver blade to turn it.
Work it back and forth a few times and the guts of the lock just strips.
Handy if you want to check the condition of a potential purchase and the seller doesn't have keys.
Pinball locks are only brass inside and they break pretty easy.

Funny you still see cases where people damage doors trying to pry them open instead of sacrificing a $10 lock.

As Strangeways says - have a REALLY good look inside first.

It 'should ' be hanging from the factory provided clip on the inside of the coin door but very likely is floating around inside the cabinet somewhere. Also remember if the machine has been transported on its end the key could have lodged almost anywhere under the playfield etc.

Failing that - Makita to the rescue!!

I have a similar problem with my Wipeout, it had a key inside the door but it doesn't seem to open the backglass.
