Custom duties and Taxes

I know that the Customs office and the Tax office gets interested when somebody imports more the $1000 worth of goods

Question, is it $1000 per shipment,..?
..or will they be charging me if I import more then $1000 from multiple places that will probably arrive in the same week?

IE, the color DMDs and my Flash Gordon playfield (and a third shipment) will probably arrive in the same week
Should I make sure I have extra set aside for Mr Swan?

It is per shipment. The way it works is that the value of the shipment + shipping must be less than AUS $1000.

I've never had any problems with this "formula".

I have a friend who works in Customs Clearance and he told me they CAN keep track of shipments and if you were importing less than $1000 worth of goods every week of the year, it will spark their interest. If you imported several packages from the same source, on the same day, then this can also raise a red flag.

Friendly overseas suppliers are normally willing to make an invoice less than $1000

some parts, or replacement parts can be exempt if its a part for personal use that is replacing a dead part.

if its for commercial resale, different story. that the advice i got from my local customs house last time i did a order over a few grand etc.
