System80 power train
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:35:38 PM »
Was having a game on Spiderman.. sorting out what working and whats not.
Then all PF lights go out and flippers die.
Turn off and back on.. PF lights are back on, but both flippers, both bumpers and both slings are not working. All other solenoids work, drops reset etc.
Turns out i have no voltage at any of the non working coils ( rest are OK at approx 28VDC).
I dont have a manual for this game.. only a manual for BLACK HOLE which i think i pulled off IPDB before GOTTLIEB made them remove all manuals.
Manual doesnt have the 28VDC power train.
Ive checked all fuses under the PF ( 4 of them).. 2 are for the PBDB and each has 28VDC on BOTH sides.
Been through each coil and gave a good tug on soldered connections to see if a break in the daisy chain and found nothing.

Im now at the rubbing of the chin stage followed by a scratch of the head... game should be exactly the same as COUNTERFORCE, INCREDIBLE HULK etc... anyone have the 28V power train diagram???

Amazing what having a diagram can do!

Non working coils is due to a dodgy interboard connector... ground on far right wasnt in place... need a new one of these.

Drop target making kick out coil fire was in the end a faulty 7404 @ Z12... looking through the schematic i think only one gate is used on this chip. I went to test the gate and saw that one leg wasnt in the socket..LOL.
 Replaced chip and problem solved.

Couple of switches not working.... one dead display. 2 drops that are like bricks!

Apart from that... all good!!!!

Chased my tail a bit on the non working switches... Jaycar dont sell 7400 chips anymore. The forced 5V on pin 10 was missing due to some bodgy repairs before me and a badly soldered socket. Fixed this and switches still didnt work although chip now tests a good AND gate. Turns out i had a shorted switch on one of the bumpers... LOL- so used to working on EM games where if this had happened a coil would have locked on... SS dont care.. just sees anything on this line as nothing as no pulse goes through the chip.
So all PF problems solved.
Faulty display lights very dimly if i put one leg of my meter on ground pin 2118A driver chip and other leg anywhere really... will see if Jaycar sell these still tomorrow.
I replaced all electrolytic caps on the sound board as its a bit screechy.. didnt do a damn thing. Would be nice to lower the tones a bit ( far too much top end) and get the sound cleaner...

anyone have any ideas on this?? Tones are set by the resistors on the 555 timer yes??... what about cleaning the sound though?
