TOM Eddy Sensor Calibration
« on: December 24, 2012, 01:13:15 PM »
Hi Guys

I have just been calibrating my eddy sensors as the magnets have been a bit hit and miss during game play.

There are 3 all up that I am aware of. Adjustment as per manual is very simple and has worked well on 2 of the 3. The idea is that you adjust the Pot  (R2) counter clockwise until the led illuminates then turn it back counter clockwise until it just turns off.

As I said 2 of the 3 went very well and those magnets are operating as they should. With the 3rd one it seems to me that the Pot (R2) may not be working. Firstly it feels different to the others as it turns a lot more freely and secondly it doesn't matter how much you turn it the led stays on.

Does it sound like I am on the right track with the (R2) Pot being broken and if so is this a part I could just purchase from Jaycar or the like and solder into the board myself without any problems. It looks quiet a simple change and I think I could do it.

Thanks for any advise in advance.

Tim

Take the Eddy Board out of the game and take it to Jaycar with you. This will help the staff source the POT.

Try swapping the boards just to make sure they are the problem

Thanks for the help guys I changed 2 POT's yesterday. All went smooth and now seems to be operating a lot better.
That's the 5th time I've put a question out there when I have had a problem and that's the filth time I have been able to fix it thanks to help from others on the forum.
A year ago I would have had a service person around to change a coil now I'm pulling out boards and changing components. Very satisfying. I can see why a lot of guys get as much if not more pleasure from the repairing and restoring than the playing.

sounds great,
It is always best to ask first if you are not 100% and wait until you get a few responses from people who know what they are doing.
I do so many repairs from people that have been given incorrect advice

Great to hear. Half the fun is looking after your own games.

Andrew - this plagues the industry at the moment. What I'm finding is some really poor workmanship from the bigger companies. Pinball owners are unfortunately used to paying high prices for poor work.

A lot of the good techs I know have either retired or left the industry - that leaves very few skilled guys and a lot of cowboys with little to no knowledge unfortunately

Just reset my TOM Maganasave pots (again)

Don't forget
to dob a bit of Glyptol or Torque-set or even nail polish on the pot screw.
This of course is to try preventing vibration resetting the pot(s)
They won't stay tuned for good - as you have discovered, but this helps.
