Star Wars Trilogy Coil with core problem
« on: April 24, 2013, 08:37:18 PM »
Hi guys,
I just bought X2 coil 31-1500 with core (090-5054-00)..
Had to get them from overseas because couldn't find them here.
Anyway I was able to get my Tie Fighter bouncing around again with one of the coils... Hasn't been working since purchased so all good there!!

2nd coil helps magnetize the ball into the x-wing area or can turn off and let it drain past the x-wing back into play
This is where things are going wrong, the magnet constantly stays on and diverts the ball into the x-wing area every time, and the coil is getting super hot because it is not turning off.
I changed it back to the old coil and it still does the same thing.
Now I don't know if this is the cause of the constant on but when soldering the wires onto the coil I put the 2 wires the wrong way which in turn when I started playing the game the f7 fuse on the power board popped.... Lesson learnt.... rewired back the right way with new fuse..
The magnet will turn off when I open the coin door and high power is cut off

Now I couldn't tell you if it was doing it before I blew the fuse but is there anything that could of caused this because of what I did or is it another problem?

Any help would be appreciated

if u could get martyj or beaky to study the schematics online, u might have a chance as both are very knowledgable.

My Star Wars Trilogy is on a storage rack here otherwise I would pull it out n get beaky to help you.

I am sure it will be simple if u study the schematics. Have u also asked on Pinside incase someone on there has heard of the issue with the same magnet. ?

Thank you for the reply Brett,
I can read schematics reasonably well so I will look into that, I have been trying to trace the 2 wires but the SWT is an absolute mess under there compared to my other 2 machines.. God knows what sega was thinking when they did the loom!?!
I haven't really been on pinside before so I will go and have a read

Whatever is switching the coil is obviously staying on. Driver transistor etc.

Leave the coil disconnected until you find the cause as you will destroy the new coil if it gets too hot.

Get the schematics out and look - no point trying to trace the wiring loom really.

Looks like the coil is the "Magnet Slide" - Coil number 24 driven by transistor Q25 (please correct me if I am wrong).

I would be checking this out - maybe the easiest way would be to remove the wire at Pin 1 of J6 on the driver board and see if the coil still locks on?

Close homepin,

(Mini Magnet) X-Wing Diverter Q17

Now I have done the same thing with the violet/brown wire and removed it and it does turns it off.
Upon further inspection Q17 on the power board looks like it has been repaired at some stage but with terrible soldering, the machine was sent to PSPA and I think that one was repaired as it certainly is fresh soldering compared to others.

Is there some how a way I can check the ohm's, on the Q17 to test if that has fluffed itself?

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction so far homepin  #*#

What sort of device is Q17? A transistor or a FET?

The part number will tell the story.

I wouldn't really bother testing it - I would replace it and any driver (if it has one, and if it doesn't it is probably a FET)

If it is a FET it MUST be replaced with the correct type (not the same part number but the same TYPE) so numbers become important.

In the swt book a Q17 (Part No: 110-0067-00) is called a TIP122

Sorry I'm learning here

That's OK - a TIP122 is a darlington transistor (two transistors in the one plastic package) it might still have a driver transistor connected to its base.

I would strongly suspect the TIP122 is shorted and so taking the coils connection to ground permanently instead of switching it on and off as required.

This transistor is supposed to simply act like a relay but if it is shorted the coil will remain activated.

Thanks heaps Homepin,

So I would be best to replace this TIP122 all together?... Soldering is not a problem for me so I don't mind replacing it. (and will do a better job than whoever did it before) &^&

I saw them on the jaycar site http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZT2292 so if this is the one I'll head down there tomorrow and purchase.
