What the hell? silicon on flipper coils???

So this was on a Dr Who I purchased from a local repairer who sold on consignment for customer, so not sure if he did it or was already there.. But regardless, what the hell are they trying to achieve here???

Hmmmm, maybe they didn't have a spare spring washer to keep the coil tight? That's the only thing I can think of, very very ordinary all the same.

Lessen vibration and cuts down on the possibility of the solder cracking and the wires separating from the coil lugs.

Went a bit overboard in this case.

Maybe the plastic side plate where the wire lugs are could be cracked, other than that looks crapola

Cutting them out   and putting new coils in (probably overkill but have spares), just thought I would share the before photos as I have never seen anything like that before... Kind of makes a flipper rebuild harder..

Many people are also not aware that most silicons will eat metal and in particular wiring.

If you do want to use silicon on metal and/or to hold a cable in place make sure it is an "acetic acid free" type.

Practically EVERY silicon HAS acetic acid in it unless it specifically states that it does not.
      
"Never use acetic acid cure room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicones in your well logging tools, or on any electronics for that matter.  Common RTV silicone made for automotive and general purpose use, the stuff that smells like vinegar, is corrosive to electronics, and its use is a death sentence to reliability."

Yeah we strike that problem with RC planes, silicon is slow to cure but can be handy in repairing foam (polystyrene) planes, and also to mount small electrical parts in said foamies...

Most silicon not only eats through the back of the electrical boards, but eats through the polystyrene too.. I use the one below with no acid and find it doesn't seem to damage the foam or the electrics (after two years of use so far)..

Yeah BOTH flipper coils are covered in it as is the shooter coil..
