yeah I am hearing you, but at least I have a NOS IM playfield just incase I find one in years to come as that will be one of the things flogged out and be hard to find later....

while waiting for the grey filament I thought I would do a paint test, in which I found some hammer tone paint and did 2 coats, but in playing I think I put the second coat on too soon as the texture flattened out as the first coat looked great with that real pitted texture that gave it the look of it being impacted with other asteroids. At least you can see the contours of the surface.

next ones will be dark grey printed, then I will wipe the asteroid with some solution to flatten out the layer lines and then do a undercoat and a hammer tone and should look the part. I got some parts from RTBB so by the end of the week I should have a set finished for evaluation by you guys.

The 3rd photo shows roughly the angle that the boulders would face to the ship

painted a earlier non useable version just to determine paint variances and photograph in a machine to get a better idea of lighting etc. Yes it is a CFTBL and it is no where near as bright as a ST but since having had to sell a few machines not much option there.

1st photo = the asteroid pointed as if mounted in a ST pointing to the ship from the lhs.
2nd photo = the asteroid pointed as if mounted in a ST pointing to the ship from the rhs.

the different views show the different contours of the asteroid shape

will hopefully have a complete set finished by the end of the week mounted on posts to give an idea of looks

finally finished the rhs, it was a tough one as I wanted to keep the post and spot light untouched, and decided to do a side access where you would slide the asteroid over the lamp fitting - with the only assembly work being removing the lamp screw, sliding the lamp into the cavity of the asteroid and then dropping the screw down the top hole and tightening up with a screw driver. You would only be able to see the side access of the rhs asteroid if you were to stand at the back of the playfield and look towards the flipper.

from here - still need to tweak the design with one more print of each and then will have to send a set out for trial - but need a volunteer to test and install as I don't have one or not near one ….

for those with thoughts or getting a Star Trek - curious of your thoughts of the design -

I reworked the rhs asteroid and now looks cleaner and not as cramped to install the light fitting and 2 sets of samples are on there way to Gov to fit up and issue some feedback and photos. 1 set painted and 1 set in dark grey straight off the printer to play with.

It will be a simple install, remove screw, slide on asteroid on to the post and then slide the spotlight back in and relocate the screw through the side or from the top screwdriver access hole. This side can be seen if you stood at the back box and looked towards the player.

it has been a little while, but happy to say I got some nice photos from a Pinside member Gov who had to find time to play around and fit mainly the lhs asteroid. It is still not final but just a end of year teaser of progress and hopefully very soon available.

They will sell as a set or individually.

YOU have done an AMAZING job here Swinksy. Smart design and great idea.
The asteroids STERN uses look like a scrunched up piece of that silver metal stuff u buy to scrub dishs in the sink with. I cant think of the name of it, but its all metal and u get it at any place in the dishwashing isle. That stuff wouldn't work ofcourse, but the Stern ones just look like the metal scourer things.

If I bought one set of yours Jady, I was thinking that I would probably put some more pit marks in it by painting them on, or use a small drill, or heat up the material and push a metal wire brush into it slightly to get the pit marks etc. I mean, the roughness of a asteroid is a personal taste.lol

But yours are excellent. Definitely a great idea to mount on the PRO Star Trek model.
