Townsville Pinball Open 12th Sep 2015 (IFPA)
« on: August 15, 2015, 09:55:51 AM »
All,

Pending IFPA approval, i would like to hold a small comp at my place, 15 minutes south of Townsville on Sat 12th September:

Time 8:30am to lunchtime (prob 12:30, depends on number of people)

Entry fee $10/person

Due to space limitations, will have to cap this at 18 people.

Let me know if you would like to attend, i have quite a few non forum locals who will be attending

Due to a couple of requests, we will have a small entry fee and prizes on offer.  $10 per player, with breakdown percentage of total cash pool as follows

1st place 50%
2nd place 25%
3rd Place 10%

15% will go towards a sausage sizzle for lunch at the conclusion of the comp if people want to stick around

Qualifying round (Round 1) will involve all players playing one game on
each of the 5 selected pinball machines. These 5 games will be randomly
selected from a pool of 9 machines, prior to the comp starting. The players
scores will be ranked across each of the five machines with the top 50
percent advancing into the finals. These will be played as 4 player games,
or 3 player games in the case of competitor numbers being not divisible by
4. Players will be randomly grouped together.

Semi final round (round 2) will be played as three or four player games
depending on how many qualified. They will all play three randomly nominated
machines with the top 4 ranked players advancing into the Grand Final. Each
qualifying person will be randomly selected into a group to play.

Grand final round (Round 3) will consist of the top 4 players playing four
player games, in a best of 3 format. Machines for final will be randomly
selected, but there will be one solid state machine*, one Bally/Williams
1990’s machine and one post 2000 Stern machine.  Highest ranked player at
the end of Round 3 wins, as per Scott Danesi software.

*Note - at this stage (and it is likely to remain that way), the only SS machine i have is Kiss, so that will probably be in the final

In the event of any round having a tied rankings for the final or to make the cut for a qualifying round, those players who are
tied will play a multiplayer tiebreaker game on a single machine randomly
drawn.

Let me know if you would like to attend

Thanks

Rob

Well, it was a fantastic morning, that stretched into mid afternoon.

Ended up with 21 people competing, with all having a heap of fun.

10 progressed into round 2, where machines were LOTR, Siderman and No Fear.

The top 4  for the finals in Round 3 were myself, Chris R, Dan G and Greg K on ACDC, Kiss (Bally) and Twilight Zone

I did OK on ACDC, and Chris absolutely nailed Kiss, we were all neck and neck on TZ, then Chris had a good last ball.....looked at the scores, and him and I were tied 1st and 2nd!

So we had agreed previously that if a tiebreaker had to occur at any time, we would do it on Kiss.  Both had a dud first ball, then I had a dream run on ball 2 and ended up winning.

1st - Me
2nd - Chris R
3rd Greg K
4th Dan G

Was stoked how well all the games held up - had a small trough issue on Spiderman, and a stuck spinner on LOTR, but both easy fixes

Thanks to those who came along, and a special thanks to Terry G who cooked the BBQ as well as keeping scores along with @martymoose . It helps out a lot and decreases the stress levels when a few chip in!

My 5yr old performed admirably as well, so was very happy when i gave him some of the prizemoney!

Warming Up

Very cool, well done on the event. Looks like a great line up of machines, I'm sure everyone would have had a blast.

Yep, was a heap of fun.  My advice is to organise a comp within your local area.  There aren't that many forum members from either forum up here, but i put the word out through work and mates and had a heap turn up.

You don't need a big line up to hold an IFPA comp, all you need to do is register it with the Australian co-ordinator - Dan Robar is very helpful and made some good suggestions on me running the comp.  The idea of having it IFPA registered is to get more people involved in competitive pinball, while having a fun social occasion - hence why it is quite OK to have these in your home with a few machines.

The more people that hold or get involved in these events, means the hobby will be promoted a lot more throughout the community
