Gottlieb Soccer Restoration
« on: April 05, 2020, 01:58:11 PM »
This restoration started 18 months ago, but I have not had time to document the work until now. I will be catching up with recent projects.

Objective

This is a "Grail" machine that will be restored as a High End Restoration. Cabinet requires a repaint as it has been painted over. The playfield is good, so there's no need to clearcoat.

Condition Report

Cabinet - 6/10 - Structurally ok, but has been painted over with house paint.

Playfield - 8/10 - Has contact applied, and is in very good condition.

Electrical 8/10 - Mechanically and electrically very good.

BEFORE pictures

The game was playable and a very good base for a restoration.

Cabinet was painted over and has scratches all over it.

Faded apron, but a very good playfield overall

Backglass is faded but in very good condition

Interesting ON/OFF Switch !

Inside the cabinet has a lot of dirt, wear and rust.

Interesting "Volume Control" on the chime unit !

Removal of the siderail reveals the original paint and finish

After repairing the structural issues, the painting begins. I take the lower cabinet to the paint shop and have the colour and finish matched. There's always a section under the siderails or coin door that has the original specs. The base is done and then speckle / webbing.

The cabinet needs to be prepared for the stencils, so masking it completely takes time and will prevent overspray.

Here is the RED stencil being applied to the base.

A light mist coat to start off, then building up the color with light coats.

Cabinet RED stencil

Time to remove the stencil

I wipe off any edges with a rag before starting the black color. The stencil is applied.

Black stencil removed -

The MIST coat is applied ;

First of the thin coats applied ;

Stencil removed ;

Finished Cabinet ;

The Cabinet is put aside and other cabinets were painted during this time.

Looking great Nino

   How are the stencils working out?  I’ve got a few resprays coming up that would be easier to buy than make

Must be magic pictures. I could not see them no matter what I tried. Left the thread for a day or two then they showed up!

The server hosting the photos is up and down like a yoyo. Hopefully they fix it soon, but the problem is at my end.
