POP BUMPER REBUILDS

Here are the basics for removing and rebuilding pop bumpers this one is from a gottlieb system1 but most bumpers are removed in the same way.

Step 1 Remove the two nuts from the bottom of the rod and ring set (PHOTO 1)

Step 2 Remove the three screws holding the bumper coil bracket to the playfield

Step 3 Gently remove the entire bumper bracket making sure the rods are coming out of the yoke

Step 4 Unsolder the wires for the pop bumper light

Step 5  With a pair of pointy nose pliers try to straighten out the leads from the lamp socket and remove any excess solder

Step 6  Remove the bumper cap and remove the two screws holding the bumper to the playfield

Step 7  Remove the whole assembly gently making sure there is nothing grabbing

Step 8  Sit the complete bumper assembly on a flat surface and gently pull the bumper base gently moving the lamp legs free

Step 8  Remove the bumper skirt spring

Step 9  Remove the bumper skirt

Step 10 Remove the rod and ring set

Step 11 Gently remove the lamp sockets legf from the bumper body

Step 12  unscrew or unbolt the Coil bracket  which should let the plunger, yoke and bumper bracket be removed from the coil  (Photo 1 and 2)

Step 13  Remove the plunger from the bracket but dont loose the spring this can either be moved complete or some bumpers you can remove the fiberglass yoke and the metal yoke from around the plunger

REBUILD TIME

Keep in mind this has been rebuilt just to show how its done so the parts arn't spotless or new..  (Buy new parts if possible they look a million times better)

Step 1  Clean or replace coil and insert a new coil sleeve same as other coils

Step 2  Assemble the plunger and yokes by sliding the fibreglass yoke into the groove (Photo 1 and 2)

Step 3  Now slide the metal yoke into the grove from the opposite side

Step 4  Insert plunger into the spring and insert back into the coil bracket

Step 5  Insert the coil onto the coil stop on the bumper bracket

Step 6  Slide the coil plunger and coil bracket assembly into the coil and hold in place

Step 7  Re install the coil bracket screws and tighten

Step 8  Insert the lamp socket back into cleaned or new bumper body and lay on a flat surface

Step 9  Put the rod and ring assembly over the bumper body

Step 10  Place the bumper skirt onto the bumper body

Step 11  Place the skirt spring over the skirt

Step 12  Install the bumper base look to make sure you have the base so the big and little holes line up or its never going to join up properly. Feed the lamp leads through the correct holes and press the base and body and they should clip together

Step 13  Now insert the rebuilt bumper into position

Step 14  Insert the two bumper screw into the top of the bumper and tighten

Step 15  With the bumper in place its now time to replace or clean and adjust your bumper switches the switch with the cup attached should be slightly open but should firmly touch when the bumper skirt is pushed by hand.  Depending on machine the second contacts which is activated buy the yoke are to either add the score or shut off the bumper relay on EMs adjust these to either the open or closed position which ever is required

Step 16  Resolder the wires onto the lamp socket and bend out of harms way

Step 17  Once switches are done its time to install the coil bracket pick up the whole assembly and gently place ito position making sure the rods have gone through the yoke holes then insert the screws to hold the bracket and tighten

Step 18  Now re install the two bolts onto the rods and the jobs done.

Step 19  Test it with the playfield up manually by pulling in the plunger if everything moves freely and the score switch is activates as it should do a test with the game on Fingers crossed it works if it does well done

THANKS DAN,your info is great.So I had a go with your instructions at hand and all was good,bloody EZ infact,so I got into a bottle of red 1/2 way into it,haven't had some for a while. Well" it" went a bit relaxed into the job then thinking it's no worries ,the pic's will get me out of the shit. NO NO I melted the platter with the solder iron ,don't do it pissed if you carn't handle piss.  Thanks Dan it was still fun,the next day I finished it and was well worth the effort.cheers
