Can someone name this coin game?
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:11:31 AM »
The foreman at my mates plastics/steel factory bent me up some stainless the other day for the HH resto, and asked about some pins. What he also asked about was the game that hung on a wall, and you put a penny (I recall them taking 2 cent pieces) and at each level you flicked the coin along an "uphill" path that had holes so the coin could easily fall inside and you lost it. I don't remember what (if any) was the payoff for getting it through the maze. Anyone recall these, and what they are called, and where one might be found?

Me either, that's the way he described it. I remember as a little kid one of these on the wall of the fish and chip shop, and trying to get my 2 cents (I think) to the bottom many times.

Googling around I found this - way more complex, but the same idea. The ones he was talking about were not big like this - maybe a couple of foot high and were mounted to the wall, but same concept.

The last time I saw these type of games 'in the wild' was a cafe/milkbar ajoining a carpark at the Queenscliff lookout
they had a few wall mounted games, the prize was that you got your coin back
I think they also had an EM baseball machine, and maybe a few older pinball machines

It burnt down 25 years ago

Nick,

You see these on eGay from time to time, they sell for around $200 - $400 - for the ones made after 1970

They were made as far back as the 1920s and they are worth good money

Be careful as they also made reproductions

What's the general name for these sorts of games, ie the equivalent of "pinball" for a search?

The games you saw are called flipballs, skillballs or even flapballs.  They were derived from a UK game called allwins.

Check out my website page it has a few pics of a few of the wall mount games I own down the bottom.
