Check the connectors close to the credit knocker. Check that some wiring hasn't drifted to where the credit knocker thumps.

Interesting problem - Check the CPU board and report back with the number of flashes. There should be a "flicker" on power up and then any number of flashes - A good board has 7 flashes.

Look for anything unusual - have a whiff of the backbox boards.

Reseat all connectors on the CPU board (with the machine off).

The game was in play when the problem happened so assume the CPU is OK?I had all the pins on J1 renewed. Could it be the connectors to J1 need to be be changed? !@#

If you change only the connector and not the pins, then you have basically not resolved any issue - just bought some time before it happens again.

I would change the pins.

Did you try my suggestions ?

Checked and reseated plugs, checked boards and they seemed ok (from a noob point of view). This morning turned power on and it didnt power up. Turned machine off, reseated J1 and wriggled the wires on the connector turned the game back on and it worked fine. Also  noticed when the credit knocker goes off the score will increase by about 40,000(like a bonus). Strange!

Has the CPU connector J4 been re-pinned, connector pins on the CPU been replaced?? I'd be checking J4 if it hasnt been replaced/repaired as the power connections to the CPU come in on J4. Also you could check the ICs that are in sockets, maybe try reseating them, as these can give trouble.

The firing of the knocker could be a PIA socket - As Mitch suggests - reseat the PIA (U10 + U11). It does sound like a connector.

Thanks for the replies fellas. So far no luck with any of the diagnosis yet.Ive taken the board to Jomacs and at a glance told me the board has plenty of hacks so will need a bit of work. Will keep you guys updated when I get the board back. Thanks again .Wish I had half the knowledge as you guys . Cheers.

Always a problem when there is ONE hack, let alone "plenty" of them. Let us know how you go with it.
