Weak Flippers
« on: April 26, 2010, 05:34:40 PM »
Ive read the previous posts on this issue but it doesnt answer what i need.
I have completely rebuilt my flippers on a late model williams pin( full flipper kit,end of stroke adjusted correctley etc) It has the right coils.
Problem is it still seems as though the flippers are really weak.
Could it be shitty coils??? , or what else could i look at and try???
Help very much appreciated,
Cheers

What is the pin your having trouble with?

What are the coils for the flippers in it?

Hey Stu . When you done up the flipper pawl onto the shaft did you leave just a small amount of gap between the pawl and the bottom of the flipper bushing (ie. when it's done up can the flipper bat and shaft lift up through the bushing - just slightly . 0.5mm at most ) . If there is no movement there it could be that there is a bit of drag between the flipper bat and the bushing .

You can also have the opposite effect if there is too much gap if the pawl is down too far the plunger will not be in direct line with the coil causing the plunger to drag in the coil sleeve .

Not sure if you have already checked these problems , and /or if this info helps you out but thought I'd throw them in just in case .

Cheers.

Are both flippers weak or just one side?

If you pull on the flipper bat, there needs a bit of play in it.  Other things to check, did the coil sleeves go into the coil easily?, file the contacts on the flipper switch or clean the opto's on the flipper pcb depending on what you have.

Failing all that and what you have done previously then new coils.

Stu,

Do you have a multimeter?

There are a couple of checks which can be done to test the coils....It would be strange for both coils to die at the same time?

Agree.
Check coil resistance with a multimeter.
Here are the figures from http://www.flippers.com/coil-resistance.html

Thanks again,

From the PinRepair.com guide -

# Check the flipper coil with a DMM set to ohms. With the game turned off, try this:

    * Notice the three solder lugs for the flipper coil. One of the outside lugs has both a thick and thin coil winding attached to it. This is the "common" lead.
    * Put one lead of the DMM on the outside common flipper lug (the one with the thin and thick coil windings attached to it).
    * Put the other lead of the DMM on the middle lug. A reading of about 4 ohms should be indicated. This is the high powered side of the coil.
    * Put the leads of the DMM on the two outside lugs of the coil. For fliptronics games, a reading of about 125 ohms should be seen. For non-fliptronics games, a litle more than 4 ohms should be seen
until the the flipper is moved manually to the full extended position, opening the EOS switch. Now about 125 ohms should be indicated.
    * If approximately these readings are not seen, the flipper coil is bad. Typically the hold side of the coil goes bad more often that the power side.

# Test the flipper diodes. To do this cut one lead of each diode off the coil lug. Then set the DMM to the diode setting. Put the black lead of the DMM on the banded side of the diode. A reading of .5 volts should be seen. Reverse the leads and no (null) reading should be shown. When done, re-attach each diode lead.

Sometimes there's a 'sweet spot' for the end of stroke switch. It might be physically functioning aok, but changing where the end of stroke occurs can often effect flipper power (on em's any way).
