TZ clock optos
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:54:42 PM »
I'm trying to fix a TZ clock for a mate, and have the following.

When the clock test occurs two of the optos (15 min and 1 of the hour (opto5)) flash intermittently (when the clock hands aren't near the opto, so i'm assuming the mahcine thinks its in two places at once, and says the clock is broken.

I have washed the board, and replaced the suspect optos with these ones from jaycar http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD1901&keywords=zd1901&form=KEYWORD.

When i put those in, i'm now getting 3 of the hour optos flashing intermittently.

If i put it in clock test, with it stopped, and interupt the beam of each opto, they all work perfectly - it seems as though its a result of the clock moving that the errors occur - i've reflowed a few of the solder joints (including the interboard connector) as it seems vibration related to me.

Or could it be something on the opto board, such as a flaky LM339 or something?

Are those jaycar optos no good for the clock?

Thanks

Rob

+1 on opto type. Try RTBB.com

To confirm I had the same problem on a new rottedog pcb when it arrived and I replaced two optoos doing the same thing. Fixed the problem. The optos I used came from rottendog btw
Still loving my Metallica Premium

Actually managed to get it going last night - replaced another two optos with some more  jaycar ones i had lying around, still had similar issues, so reflowed every single joint, tested all continuities, and gave the interboard connector pins a sand - these seemed to sit too easily in one place, so i wedged the two boards apart another mm or so, where the pins were a bit more snug, and am thinking this may have been the issue all along - if the pins broke contact breifly, the opto might flick on and off?

Anyway, worked for 5 games straight, so will see if it lasts.
