Early Williams SS flipper-return lane guide question
« on: February 12, 2012, 08:01:01 PM »
Hi all,

Just a quick question about the flipper-return lane guide on early 80's Williams games (Black Knight in particular). As the ball travels down the flipper return lane, is it normal for it to get bumped up slightly as it passes over the gap between the end of the metal return lane guide and the flipper (see the picture for the spot I'm talking about)? Or can this be adjusted somehow? It would be a lot easier to make shots on the fly if it didn't but if that's how the game is supposed to play so be it.

I don't think the lane guide can be repositioned but maybe the flipper can? Or maybe a different thickness of rubber is required? Anyone know?

Ta.

My Gorgar did the same thing i think the stainless guide gets worn down over time.   I removed mine filled the holes in the playfield and repositioned them.

Makes it much more playable

Can you post a picture of how they are now? Thanks

Actually, yours looks a little closer than mine, does the ball flow smoothly over that gap or does it still get bumped up?

If the ball has a bit of pace going down the in-lane it bounces a small bit but you but don't notice it.

My BK has a small bump but not too bad, I did loosen the screws and was able to move the guide a smidgen which helped. My Gorgar had really beat up guides which acted like a ski jump, I ended up making new guides from some SS plate and they work well.

I have solved this problem by making some plastics to fit over the lane guides, see here:

I think this happens because newer style flipper rubbers are both wider and thicker than this produced for these machines in the 80's. I was able to resolve it on my Gorgar by loosening the lane guide and shifting the guide up then tightening the screw, not much play but it did help.
