Hankin flipper coil alternate anyone
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:30:33 PM »
I got the Hankin Howzat fired up today, I'm feeling a little pleased with myself, when I first got this machine I had no idea what to look for.
When I first powered it up today it refused to boot. I checked all the fuses and found a slo blow 3 amp fuse on one circuit blown. Replaced the fuse and it promptly blew again.
Disconnected that circuit from the power supply board and noted it almost booted.
Got out my circuit breaker 3 amp fuse, plugged it into the clip, booted up and was able to observe one pop bumper coil locking on.
Disconnected said coil, re-set the circuit breaker and to my delight the machine booted up fine.
It does have a dead left flipper, I'm guessing the coil is bad although there are no signs of burning and it tests kind of OK. but did note the EOS switch was broken, bottom leaf fallen off so this may have contributed to the flipper coils demise.
So I am now chasing a flipper coil for my Hankin, part number on coil es ES110, although this is probably just a number that Hankin made up. It seems this machine may have a lot in common with bally machines of the same era so I'm guessing a bally flipper coul may work.
I understand the part numbering on some coils designates the number of turns and the gauge of the wire but I have no idea what the specs are for my Hankin coil.
Can anyone advise what I may be able to use as a replacement??

Cheers

Try replacing the EOS switch before replacing the coil. If the switch is broken the coil wont pull in or will be very weak.

Hi Mitch

Yep, that was the problem alright, I was thinking about it the other day and I realised the EOS switch must be closed in order to complete the circuit to the flipper solonoid. With the leaf broken off there was no juice getting through.
I made up a replacement leaf out of mild steel, It works but not very well, the mild steel doesn't have enough spring in it to return to closed so the flipper only works for a bit. I got it working a bit better by sticking a rubber band around the two leafs to make them contact again once the flipper is in rest position but its only a stop gap measure.
Now the question is where can I get a new EOS switch for the Hankin???
I note that some parts from bally fit this machine which makes sense as it would hardly warrant tooling up to make specific hardware for a low production run as the hankin machines.
So they would have sourced most of their hardware from readily available stocks. I see RTBB has some EOS switches but I am at a loss as to which one to order??
Any suggestions??

Hello Deep Six,
I recently made a new EOS switch for my Meteor - was really easy. I bought generic switch blades & contacts from PBresource. Here is the link to the Common Switch Parts http://pbresource.com/pfswitch.htm#common . Im not sure if you can buy generic blades in Aust - Im sure one of the long term forum members will know.

Its pretty simple to make one, these blades are all longer than required, and you just cut them to the required length and then punch a contact on them. Just copy the length of the original switch blade.

Hope that helps.
