Not pinball but electronic related
« on: December 22, 2011, 05:47:46 PM »
Hi Guys

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this one. I'm wondering if you can repair a motorcycle CDI box, I know all the components are buried in resin or urethane (not sure exactly what) so one would need to somehow dissolve all this and get to the offending parts.
I'm guessing there is not too much wrong and perhaps a small component or two is all that is required to repair.
Anyone have any ideas ??

Cheers

Ric

Motorcycle wreckers who will have the whole affair very cheap, and lots of free expert advice of how to change out n fix. Sometimes the motor cycle wreckers will perform the surgery for you for a small amount of money. They do this stuff all day everyday and know most bikes off by heart inside n out. hope it helps.  ^^^

Thanks COT

I'm hoping I can figure out how to do this myself. I sent a CDI unit to a customer in WA, got it shipped direct from the US, he fitted it and says it is faulty, I am now stuck with a brand new honda CDI that doesn't work, and I am down $200.
That plus another similar one sent to a customer on the gold coast a few months back.
I figure there can't be too much wrong with these units, I have investigated buying new units direct out of china but they have a minimum order quantity of 50 units, anyway, enough of my problems, just hoping to salvage something.

Cheers

I say get the supposed faulty units back and check them, or have them checked under warranty. If they have burn marks all over them, then the customer obviously has installed them incorrectly. I always rely on the manufacturer, or his agent to bring some factual reality to the problem. The manufacturer or his agent are experts and well versed with all these products. They will tell u in 5 seconds if its a faulty one, or a damaged one, thus probably saving you the $200 etc. Expert advice from these people is usually always free.

You would be amazed at just how much people will help you and give you great advice once u ask for their professional opinion. Get the products back before sending out anything else. Thats the only way to determine who or what is at fault, thus saving you $$$. Going it alone on a specialised product is only good after u exhaust all other options.

these types of things are made disposable and also robust. You won't be able to remove the epoxy without totally destroying the parts and even if yu could I doubt you could RELIABLY repair it.

Thanks guys, looks like I'm sunk. I was kind of thinking that if I could remove the epoxy, find out what components make these things work, maybe find someone who could make some circuit boards for me (hint hint) then I could use my new found circuit board repair skills to simply make my own new CDIs.
I figured that since jaycar offers a cdi in kit form it couldn't be too hard to just make your own.

Oh well, I should probably just stick to reselling parts and let somebody else do the manufacturing.

Cheers all
