Rebuilding Flippers
« on: March 14, 2012, 12:22:59 PM »
Hey guys, just had a couple of questions regarding flipper rebuilds please. Did a quick search and found nothing of substance so have to ask. I am kinda ok with general knowledge of my pins but this is the first time i will tackle a rebuild of any sorts.

I want (i think) to make my flippers in my AFM better, lol. They struggle to catch the ball properly when being launched out of the SOL hole. That and when you first launch the ball to carry all the way round past the pop's. At times they feel like they are sticking slightly as well, by this i mean not reacting quickly or pausing ever so slightly.

Do i need to buy a kit as listed below or are there other types of maintenance to that will help.

I was looking around at kits to rebuild and found these: http://www.rtbb.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_168&products_id=406

Is this all i need? By the looks of it there are eos's there. Does this require soldering.

Thanks guys

Best thing to do is buy the kit and replace all the of the parts it contains.  You will need to solder the EOS wires.  I would also buy new flipper bushings.  Make sure that you have a small gap between the base of the flipper bat and the top of the bushing so that the bat travels freely.  Do one at a time so that you have the other side as a reference and you will be fine.

The RTBB Kit is really all you need. If you want to take it a step further, you can buy the bushings as they are ofter broken, and you won't know they are broken until you dis assemble.

http://www.rtbb.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40_38_72&products_id=486

Just check the manual to confirm the part number, but I'm sure it is ok.

You will need to solder on the new EOS. Do one flipper at a time, and replace all the parts in the kit. Before you fully tighten the 3/8 nut on the pawl, check the travel of the flipper is free, and there is no physical resistance.

You will notice a HUGE difference with a new kit. Also check you have the right flipper coils.

Yeah I did the kit on my old TOM including bushes as they where broken and that's hard to tell unless you pull them out or the flipper feels abit loose I'm no solder expert but I got through it and only burnt myself twice lol
Good luck

The manual has an exploded diagram in section 2 of the flipper assemblies for reference as well.

I would be pulling everything apart, checking for dirt/gunk filled parts and cleaning it all thoroughly first though to see if any improvement before buying a flipper kit.

Just my view....

From memory you don't live too far away - happy to give a basic soldering lesson if needed.

Great offer thanks, second member to do so.  #*# Will let you know, going to pull apart the flipper and give a wipe down first as mentioned above, see if that improves things first.

Mind you, might take me a few go's at watching how to solder get the hang of it  &&

Ok guys, little help please. Pulling my flippers apart as we speak. What exactly am I cleaning here? Am I just removing black 'dust' from around the housing and mech etc? Should I be using anything to clean with or just ragging it down. !@)

PS: there are no plastic coils found when pulling these apart. Could this be a problem as to why they are not snappy enough?

The coil sleeves would be stuck in the coil.  There will be a lip on one of the coil ends.  You can run a rag through with novus and it will pick some dust up.  Check the plunger and nylon link for damage and play as well as the coil stop for damage, or better still buy another kit and replace the parts.

Cheers, found the coil sleeve after a bit of poking around  !@) novus is what I am using so that's good.

Thought about buying the kit to replace the parts but as has since been pointed out to me it's not really needed. The metal parts look like they are brand new and seem pretty thick, doubt any damage sustained to those parts. Might just look at grabbing some new sleeves and bushes even though they look ok.

Slight wear on the bushes where they enter the playfield but otherwise look good.

Thanks for the help everyone.  ^^^
