coils won't fire..........HELP
« on: August 04, 2012, 04:17:29 PM »
Hi Guys, Just had my MPU and Driver boards refurbished and reinstalled them om my Williams system 4 Phoenix. Started it up for the first time since getting it at auction. Well everything worked fine EXCEPT anything coil related this includes the sound card. The flippers don't fire although the lights will dim....mmmmm. I checked the coils and they all report about 4 to 5 ohms. checked for broken lines back to the powerboard fuse, that was ok. While checking roll over switches etc 1 of the coils did try 2 fire on a couple of occasions. I would like to test the voltage to the coils but not sure what to set the meter on. So any help would be appreciated.

sounds like power supply problems or connector problems.
the boards where tested in a Phoenix prior to being sent.

The ground input for the solenoids and sounds are at 2J10 (second set of pins from the bottom left of the solenoid driver board) this is isolated from the other grounds so if you don't have this connection right then your coils won't fire

I would be checking the fuses and connections on the power supply board and the connections to the bridge rectifiers below the power supply.
also check connector 3J2 & 3J1 on the power supply.

voltage between the coil and GND should be around 28 Volts dc

keep me posted, and i am sure we can get this sorted for you  ^^^

yep, Beaky actually put the board(s) in my Phoenix and we had several decent games and all worked perfectly/fine.

(It was at this point I conned him to take all the boards out of my Phoenix and make them all like new again as well).lol

Either way, Beaky will sort it for you. Theres nothing he cant fix, determined little bastard he is.lol  %.%

Fuses are fine, first thing I checked. What do I need to put the multimeter on Eg settings. I know to put the pos on any lug and the black to the earth strap and i'm guessing with power on. Also the relay does pull down when the credit button is pushed.

Were the interconnect pins replaced?  This causes many issues. I always replace both male and female ones.

With the game off and power removed just reseat the driver / CPU boards

put your multi meter on D.C. with the voltage on auto or at least 100V

game does not have to be started but has to be on.

if the flipper relay is energising then there must be a problem with power getting to the coils or the GND getting to the driver board.

The Flippers run off the same supply and fuse as the solenoids.

from what you said about the lamps dimming when the flipper buttons are pressed indicate a GND problem at the power supply

the inter connectors where replaced both male and female. All headers and I.C. sockets where also replaced, The interconnectors to the pins on this pair or boards are a very tight fit.

Ok after testing (had to put the multimeter on 200 as the next lowest was 20) coils gave just over 1 while the flippers were 35. Checked the powerboard on those connectors and 3j2 on pin 3 has some scorch marks on plug (cable side) So it maybe that I will need to get that board done.

It would also be worth replacing the connectors on the loom that plug into the power supply if you have the power supply done.
