How to wire these globes
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:50:33 PM »
Pictured is the new A2916 globes I recently purchased and a sample of the ones they are replacing. Is there an difference in wiring these new ones. The old style is wire to the connector lug and the braid to the body of the globe but the new style has two lugs. Do I omit connecting to one lug and if so do it matter which is connected?

Thanks

Good question, I've got some of those globe holders coming and was wondering the same thing.

Thanks from me also!

thanks mate, I tried one on a dead insert and tried all three combos with no luck. So I'm guessing it could be the lamp driver but wanted to clarify the connection issue first.

Are you sure about that?

What I'm seeing is two different globe holders.
The one on the left is for controlled lamps and the one on the right is for GI.
If you want to use the controlled lamp holder for GI then just ignore one of the lugs and solder the braid to the bracket the same as the other lamp holders in your machine.

Yup - A-2916 and A-2915 can be used in Ballys and I've been using them for years. The bracket is where the GI return can be soldered. It is common with the bottom lug. Use a meter and it will show continuity. The middle lug is for a diode - which is not needed on the older games. The top lug is for the controller lamp or GI wire. The "easy" way to look at it that the braid is soldered in the same place as the original braid and the lcolored lamp wire is soldered to the top lug.

thanks Nino, but I'm a little confused here. in this particular case I have a single wire that originally connected to the lug and I had two blue wires that connected to the frame as did the braid. so do I connect the single coloured wire to the bottom or top lug and what the braid to the frame, and the 2 blues wires?????

Two blue wires are soldered to the bracket - exactly as original. I've done it here on the Eight Ball - check the Blue and Red wires ;

thanks mate but......here's the scenario I have where you have the 2 blues and this red wire. the picture shows the original globe holder. I have tried soldering the red on the lug where you have the 2 blues and soldering the 2 blues & braid on the frame. have also tried the braid to frame, 2 blues to where you have it on the lug and the red on the other lug and I think I have tried the other combo braid to frame, blues to middle lug and red to outside lug. all with no success.

I'm trying to work out which combo is correct and then troubleshoot why the globe is still dead

thanks for your patience

Try this: insert a known good lamp into the holder. Blue wires and braid should go to the bracket as it was on the old lamp holder. Then use a meter to check continuity from the bracket to one of the lugs. The lug with continuity is the one that gets the red wire. If the lamp still does not work then the problem is elsewhere. Either I the wiring or more likely at the driver board connected or driver board circuit.

Thanks guys, have followed your suggestions. I also replaced another dead holder that only has one wire and a braid. Both failed. I decided to reflow the solder on the offending pins on the lamp driver, no go

I tried checking the scr's but unsure if I did it right. I put the dmm on diode/beep and touched the two outside legs and got a beep on known working globes and the dead ones. No beep when touching the middle leg and the outside ones

Please confirm if this is correct?

I did investigate the connectors inside the plugs and they all seem quite tarnished. So if what I did above was ok, it would seem a session of replacing connectors is required. Doing this is the most time consuming for me and why I have left this to last.

Hello again, tested the scr's a little better. I could measure one side the c&g and got .6v on the known working lamps and got .7v & .8v and two of the known dead lamps. I also re-pinned j2-4 with no luck prior to testing with no luck.

I couldnt get a reading when swapping the dmm leads on either the good or bad lamps, but seem to feel the scr's are probably the cause and will now look at fixing the pcb.

If you disagree please let me know otherwise its off to try my next step of repairs. Thanks for all your help

Just like to post another finding for anyone that may come across this same problem. I am 100% sure its a pcb problem and pretty sure its the scr's as dumb arse me just twigged i have another bally game that would have a similar pcb. So i plugged it in and whammo the globes are a goer.

I'm so embarassed at not realizing this was an option open to me.  &^&
