where to start!?
« on: June 04, 2013, 01:51:12 PM »
So ive been scouring a few different sources for my first pinball purchase

I have been on eBay and gumtree looking at for sale options... cant see the for sale thread on these forums yet until i reach 20 posts apparently.

I feel that i just need to buy a pinball that i don't need to restore in anyway to play it (although i think i might be asking for trouble anyways because im sure they all need fixing and maintenance straight up anyways)

Ive seen restoration threads that a far beyond my skill and understanding of pinball machines especially from "Strangeways" and "robm" and there is no way i would even consider a project like that at any point in the near future

I suppose my simple question is: could i have recommended 3 dollar values (it may not be that simple obviously as i suppose a machine is worth what someone is willing to pay)

Below Average $
Average $$
Above Average $$$

For the following machines

Fish Tales
White Water
Twilight Zone
T2
Judge Dredd
Indiana Jones

Or other similar machines that i may enjoy from looking at that list

James

there are some many variables to a $ value with a machine so to make it simplier
- below average - will have possible: playfield damage, cabinet damage, ramp damage as well as hacked and electrical problems and could be $500-$1000 below the Average price
- above average - will be very nice, collector quality, restored, HUO (home use only) etc and could be $500-$1500 above the Average price

so best to answer the Average price as a guide:
Fish Tales - $2.5 - $3k
White Water - $2.5 - $3.5k
Twilight Zone - couldn't help you
T2 - couldn't help you
Judge Dredd - $1.8 - $2.2k
Indiana Jones - $4k

look up pinpedia as they have a search engine that looks up the ebay sale history of pinballs world wide. Also comparing the US with us is not accurate and most DMD pins will be approx $500 to $1000 less than the selling price here in Aus.

hope that helps as a guide and maybe others will chime in

Biggest piece of advice, is don't rush into anything...unless its a screaming bargain, in which case, tell nobody and hand over the cash and get out of there!!!!

You are in Melbourne i see, so why not go to a dealer and play a few games.  Normally dealers are more expensive than collectors, but if you want the safety of a warranty (they may offer one), then it may be your best bet.  Alternatively, get to know a couple of forum members and play their machines and see what you like/don't like about a machine.  Or go visit a few machines on site and play them.

Pretty much any pinball can be fun.

My advice would be to buy a lesser value machine to start with, learn a little more about them, then either trade up or add more to your collection.  If you had a budget (i think its best to specify that first) or say $5000, i would not go out and buy a single machine worth $5k, getting two $2-$3k machines will most likely be more fun for a new collector.  This also has the benefit that if one has some issues that need sorting at some point, you can play the other.  Or down the track you can sell one machine, and still have one to play while looking for another.

Alternatively, if your budget is around $3k, you are unlikely to get an Indian Jones or Twilight Zone unless they are in poor condition.

Many ebay pins are overpriced, and i would be very hesitant buying your first machine sight unseen - or at least without another forum member/someone with experience looking at it.

i did happen to have looked at the pinpedia rankings and information on the links for individual pinballs

and the values were severely off compared to what i was seeing but it makes it much more clear that i have someone backing up my hunch that the US market seems much more competitive if im not living in it.

and thanks for the advice:)

I like that first bit...haha

I def would not consider something without seeing it at this point...I can only imagine some of the stories of the unfortunate.

thanks for the advice :)

It is not an easy question to answer. A Fishtales might be valued at $2600 and be that price at several dealers. But the level of workmanship to arrive at that price can be a huge difference. It has been a buyer's market for almost 3 years, and there are more machines arriving in Australia at this point in time. So you need to do your homework so that you obtain full value of your purchase dollar. There are more short cuts out there at the moment, and the standard of reconditioned or "shopped" pins is at it's lowest for many years.

My tips would be ;

Decide on a shortlist of pins
Decide on a price that fits your budget
Look around and personally view dealer's games. If they are dealer's pins on eBay, look at them "in person"
Ask HEAPS of questions here

Try to visit collectors and ask them about their experiences in buying pins and also play their games.

The most important tip - DO NOT buy a pinball "on impulse". This always ends in a disaster.
