DESW shifter/death star target problem
« on: June 28, 2013, 10:29:25 AM »
Just got myself a DESW and have noticed that on the fifth moon (Orange) the door won't open when you push the shifter down. From my understanding of the game you can open the door early on the fifth moon but only have a limited time to activate tri-ball as opposed to waiting to light all eight moons and have it open with no time limit.
Now I tried manually pressing the switch from inside the cabinet with no luck and thought it was a faulty mircoswitch however I ran through the diagnostics and it detected when I pushed the switch down and when it was returned up  !@# So it appears the switch is fine. Anyone have any other ideas as to what might be going on? Any help is appreciated.

Other than that the game works great and having a blast  :D

Cheers

Theres probably nothing wrong with the machine, just go into the machines adjustments and it'll be in the settings. From memory the level moon you need to be on to activate the Death Star early will change depending on if you have the game on easy, factory, hard or any in between. I'm out of town at the moment but if you have any trouble finding the right settings I can have a look at mine on Sunday.

I'll take a look but if you could confirm that be appreciated, no rush though.

No worries, I'm back home tomorrow arvo. I'll have a look and let you know then.
Great game by the way. It was my first machine and one I played the most with mates back when it was new. Enjoy!

I have a feeling it might be a solder joint under the middle relay. Heard of a few people having problem with the target dropping and also inconsistent spinning of the death star which were related to this replay having cracked or dry joints. Going to look at this today and see if it solves the problem.

On a separate note I wondering if I could draw on peoples knowledge of the game. At the end of the game what's the go with the jawas and R2D2? Thought it was just if your number matched theirs something would happen but had this happen and nothing??

Just re-soldered the relay, it looked good but once you put the iron to it you could see they hadn't flowed properly the first time. Good news it fixed the turning of the death star but bad news had no effect on the target coming down when you use the shifter.

So traced the wire from the switch and it goes to connector CN8 (its the green wire with the purple stripe). Might take the board off later and see where it goes from there.

Just above the connector I noticed a missing transistor at Q48. Crashramp when you look at your pin would you mind confirming if there should be a transistor there and if so what type? From the look of the board one has been removed. I've attached a picture of the location

I have mine set on Factory which will give you the option of dropping the shifter and hitting the fire button on the Orange moon. You can check which setting you have your game on by going into the game adjustments.

Inside the coin door the green button should be out and then scroll through using the black button until you get to adjustment 7. You will scroll through the Audits first so don't confuse audit 7 with adjustment 7. Once your on Adjustment 7, use the Start button to scroll though to Factory.

Page 15 of the manual has the adjustment details if you have it. If not you can down load here. http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?gid=2358

Heres what the DMD should look like.

You can also adjust the ease of advancing the Moons on Adjustment 46.

As far as the Jawa match at the end of the game, that's also just a game adjustment. If the game was in an arcade you'd have it set to give a free game on a match up. For home use its not necessary.

Transistor should be there and it's the same as the others.

Changed the setting but unfortunately didn't work for my problem. Had hoped it was that simple but looks like there is actually something wrong somewhere.

No good, but there's plenty of others here with tech experience who I'm sure will be able to jump in and offer some advice here.

the missing transistor is not used on this game
does the door open in test mode?
i assume there is a switch for door up and door down? is this switch working correctly?
I am not 100% familiar with all the functions of this game so excuse my ignorance on the door functions

There's a motor for this door also. Not to be confused with the motor which makes the Death Star turn. Does the door open at other times? When set to Factory It should open on the third ball if you haven't opened it earlier by advancing the moon. Is it doing this?
When I first brought my SW it was a dog of a machine with every problem imaginable. Great game now but I did end up having to buy a new motor for the Death Star and R2-D2. May not be your problem but I just thought I'd mention it. The motors were very noisy and only worked occasionally.
