My Flash ready for a spring clean
« on: September 07, 2013, 09:00:19 PM »
Well the time has finally come for me to bring back Flash back to its former glory. This machine I bought from an operator in 1980 for $500. I played it for about 3 years, not too many games, so it had an easy life. I knew where the game was in the wild so I was certain that it had an easier life than other Flash machines. They were popular and I had seen some pretty worn out ones after 12-18 month of heavy plays in the arcades.
I had this machine in storage for 30 years and what you see in the photos is all original from 1979, rubbers, coils, playfield, backglass, even the ball!
The two lowere flippers are yellow, not white and they were changed by the operator. All the drop targets, bumpers, plastics, etc. are original.
I will start with a good clean and rubber and lamp changes, some minor cabinet touch ups. After that, I will cross fingers and try to fire up the System 4 hardware, heaven knows what gremlins are lurking there after 34 years!

That machine is in excellent condition !

I look forward to the updates. Flash is one of my favorite games - best SYS4/6 in my view.

Looks really nice, I have fond memories of playing in the eighties this game. I am really considering buying one but unsure if my improvement in skill level might make it too easy now. Must find one to play before I make a fi a' decision. But I do like the look of a flash pinball
Still loving my Metallica Premium

Looking at the serial number database, this is an early build. The serial is stamped on the lower cabinet front, left and right of the coin door. Mine is 356202 and the right hand side also has 02 stamped below the serial. I would say this is a February 1979 build where production started in January.

Wow . That Flash looks minty fresh  ^^^.

I was too young and stupid to even think of buying any pins in the early 80's when they were practically being given away .  !!!
I need more room ! and more $$$

There is plenty of work even on a Flash in good nick. There are tell signs showing the vintage of this machine.
Some finer detail work is neccesary to cover the wrinkles of age, no matter how well the machine is maintained. Here are some close up photos showing minor cabinet scuffs, upper playfield ball swirls, oxidising lamp holders, apron paint blemishes, to name a few.

In the following photos you can see where the lower playfield contact has protected the paint whereas the upper was unprotected. Fortunately Flash has a lot of black on the upper half and there are no major paint chips or wear. On the next photo can be seen yellowing around the lamps, more swirls and the last photo shows the pop bumper lamp holder oxidised.

The following photo shows the extent of swirling around the head area of Flash followed by two photos of cabinet blemishes requiring a touch up.

The final two shots show the right hand side of apron where the paint has faded where the original operator had a sticker and the glue reacted with the paint. The pop bumper caps are in good nick and the Flash logo is perfect however, the plastic is yellowing with age, Any suggestion on how to 'whiten' these? They do not look too bad in the photo.

I read quite a few posts where the advice for the best clean of ball swirls is Magic Eraser dabbed in Isocol. Well I gave it a try tonight and it works like magic! A slow and patient process but the results are amazing. In the following shot, I cleaned a small area near the biceps and you can see the difference compared to the forearm.
Well, no excuses now for not having anything to do in my spare time.

Does anyone know what is on the warning sticker on the back of Flash. Mine has half flaked off with age and I want to reproduce one. There is a Flash on ebay in the States which has a picture of the back, but the sticker is hard to read. This is the photo on ebay.
