Rust-oleum paint
« on: October 09, 2013, 12:03:04 AM »
Well, while in a restoration mood, my wife comes along with an old tricycle and says, "try bringing this one from the dead".
The tricycle belongs to her niece who got it almost 30 years ago as a toddler. She gave it to our kids and my youngest has outgrown it 3 years ago. Now our niece has two kids of her own, the youngest is just learning to walk. My wife wants to give the tricycle back but not in its 30 year aged state.
I gave it a clean but it still looks so crappy with flaking paint and sun bleached plastics. So, off to Bunnings today and the lady in the paint section told me to try a new paint called Rust-oleum. This thing primes and paints and sticks to wood, metal or plastic. I gave it a try on the rear tray and the results are good. The photos show the before and after a couple of coats. I will give the frame and seat a couple of coats over the next few days and then finish off with a clear coat.
You never know, this stuff might be OK for some pinball plastics like yellowing pop bumpers on older machines.
I look forward to seeing the expression on my niece's face when she sees her 'new' tricycle.

If you don't remember the 70s then you were on drugs.
If you remember playing pinball in the 70s you were having a good time.

The trike has come up a treat. This paint is briliant on plastic and sticks good, I will definitely use this product on other dull plastics. Used very little from the can (they claim that the can goes twice the distance of other same size paints.
All up cost was about $5.
Now I can go back to my pinball restoration work.

That has come up sensational! Did you have to do any prep work other than an initial clean?

I remember riding a trike like that as a kid!

No prep work apart from clean. This paint has primer so it sticks like glue. I gave the seat and tray a couple of Krylon clear coats for good measure to protect the surface.

Great find and well done on the trike. I think that our friends in the USA use the rust-oleum products all the time - there's an anti rust product they soak legs in overnight. Sounds like some of the products are starting to arrive downunder.

Yep, excellent result and another old timer toy saved.  Imagine how many of these end up in the tip because they look old and crappy.

I have got some very crappy old pinball legs, I might give this stuff a go and see how they turn out.
