The manual will cover the alignment of the motor with respect to the switch stacks - but - it is hard to follow. There's no real need to completely disassemble. You can leave the plastic cogs in place and there might be 4 screws holding the plate with the switch stacks. Remove the late and you have access to the cogs to clean them. Use a permanent marker to "mark" the alignment of the motor and cogs IF you decide to strip completely.

Recently I wanted to clean full banks of relays and switch stacks on an EM without pulling every relay apart. I used an Electrolux steaming unit which removes all the grime and works a treat. You will need to ensure that you thoroughly dry off any excess moisture on parts with compressed air or leave out in the sun.

That sure is different. i would never have thaught about using one of those. Then again some of the tips i have gotten fromAP members are really thinking outside of the square. which really works a treat.  ^^^

Interesting - I thought the steam cleaners leave a damp residue ? In the case of relays on the baseboard, doesn't it leave steam / water on the wood etc ?

I do remove the relays from the bank and cover other areas with a cloth/rag (you could use plastic). The contacts, contact arm and spacers get quite warm which would assist in evaporating off some of the moisture. If dried off properly there would really be no rusting issue in the future. Would be worth giving it a trial on some old parts if not confident.
