early bally coin door socket E120-162
« on: June 14, 2014, 10:53:13 PM »
This is doing my head on. I bought a few of these as being the part I need, but I can't get them to work in the coin door. Looking at the socket it does not look like the picture. The mounting bracket seems isolated from the base. If I solder the two wires to the lugs I get no go. Do I need to wire these sockets a little differently to get them working? I'm trying to replace the corroded sockets in my space invaders. Thanks

Yes, you need one like the picture, not the one you are using %$%

Here is one from Pinball Life:

You don't use the isolated tab - that is for mounting a diode in a lamp matrix (Williams) system.

Thanks mate, its a bugger seeing they're labelled as what's required. There's no way of making these work is there? If not I'll have to hold off for a good whole until there is more stuff I need to make the postage cost worthwhile.

I use a replacement globe holder. I'll have a look if I have any left over and send you a couple Rob. Just send me a PM to remind me  *%*

You could, but you would need to isolate the leg from the coin door somehow, then solder one wire to the leg and the other to the middle tab (on the left side in your picture).  The tab on the right side does not do anything.

I have a fair few that I purchased and think I can use these for under the inserts when they go.

I recently used a couple on a Bally door - I'll have a look and advise.

I'm not sure why the one you have isn't working Rob, I've used the same ones on coin doors for Flash Gordon and Xenon and they work fine. I'd have thought Space Invaders being the same era Bally would have been the same but perhaps I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time) I'll take a photo of how mine is wired.

Green/red on the inside lug and Yellow/black on the outside lug. It's the same on Wiring to the coin door lights on all 4 of my Bally's.

This might help you understand whats going on, i've taken your pic from your first post and modified it slightly  :D

The 2nd lug, its whole purpose in life is a tie point for a diode on games that have a lamp matrix type setup, so it has NO connection at all to the barrel portion where the lamp fits in, hence why your lamps dont work! Notice in the pic i have indicated on the drawing of the socket(s) where the wires would go.. notice the green/red lug goes directly to the barrel portion whereas yours is insulated.

You would really have to solder the green/red wire to the barrel as i have indicated in the pic below.. this would work BUT.. as pointed out by ballywannabe it might need to be insulated from the coin door where it screws on.

A bit hard to see in the pic, but it looks like you are using the coin door as your "ground".  It will work, but is not how it is meant to be, and I would imagine could cause other problems??

Thanks, it's been working on Flash Gordon and Xenon since I did the coin doors nearly 12 months ago but I did have an issue with Aux lamp board on FG awhile ago perhaps this was the reason? I'll swap mine over as well just to be sure.

that's how I wired mine but not lighting. I even reversed just in case and a few other configs with no luck.

Nice soldering btw
