Fathom pop bumper globe holders
« on: June 17, 2014, 05:06:16 PM »
Hi Guys, I've been doing some work on my Fathom and wondered if these types of globe holders are suitable to use in Fathom bop bumpers? The original ones don't seem to be available any more and the ones currently in the pops are very brittle so they need to be changed. Thanks.

You'll probably find that the height from when the globe is installed, to when the cap is fitted is not enough.

I'm sure Nino will have a link to the correct holders.

Are they a #555 or #44/47.

They are a 555. I've fitted one already and it's not working but because nothing was working when I got this machine I'm unsure if it's the holder that's the problem or something else. I swapped the spoon switch at the same time and the bumper is working just not the globe. I have tried a different globe in it as well just be be sure it wasn't the globe. The boards have been rebuilt and all .100 and .156 connectors have been re-pinned throughout the game. All other lights are working.

I hate those holders Adam, difficult to position and yes Marty is right, can interfere with the cap. What do the fathom one look like?

Worst case you can swap it out to one of the 44 type if the originals are NLA.

This is the one I removed.

The holder connects to two wires within the pop bumper which then solder on to 2 separate lugs attached to the spoon switch. These lugs only seem to act as a connection point between the pop bumper light wire and the loom wires feeding them. Hopefully that makes sense.

I ordered some from PBR. They were the only place that had the original part numbers and they were second hand or "pulled" parts.

You could try the ones in the picture, Adam - they should work. Maybe use a low profile LED ?

Thanks Nino. Perhaps I have another issue with this pop bumper as I have one of these connectors in already and it's not working. As I haven't had this game 100% yet should all pop bumpers be on all of the time or do they need to be lit during game play? I had thought that they were lit when the ball rolled over the corresponding lane switch above them but I'm not sure on this.

A little bit of progress tonight. I swapped another switch and lamp socket over tonight and it worked. So at least I know that the lamp holder type are suitable it's just the first pop bumper which is still having problems. I de-soldered the light socket from the first one tonight and jumpered it over the a working one and it worked that way so the socket is good but still not lighting when is wired back as it should be on its pop bumper.

I had a sticky beak at Adam's machine today and I am very disappointed to say the machine beat me.  In fact, I'm pretty P'd off.

Anyway.......

We found a dead transistor on the lamp driver board associated with the pop bumper globe in question -Q39.  I would have quite happily put $100 on it that this was the issue and started spruiking that Adam was going to owe me big time etc etc.  I replaced it and bugger me, the lamp was still dead.  lesson 1 - keep my fat mouth shut until it is fixed next time.

There is continuity between the lamp socket lug and the corresponding pin on the connector.  There is continuity between the common power wire to this lamp socket and the other 2 pop bumper lamp sockets.  The wire is the correct wire going to the correct pin position on the J3 connector on the lamp driver board.  I am pretty confident that the wiring isn't the issue.

We tried another lamp driver board - it made no difference.

We even tried another solenoid driver board - it made no difference.

One thing I did notice though was that when the roll over switch for the corresponding lane (lane A) that should light the pop bumper was activated, it in turn activated the right hand pop bumper (as if a ball had activated the pop bumper) which should be totally unrelated and as far as I am aware should not have been activating.  This may be related to some sort of switch matrix issue??????

This is where we stopped as Adam had to go back to work.  So as far as I can tell, the only thing we haven't tried swapping with another board is the MPU and everything else seems to test OK.

Anyone have any thoughts.....please?

Just to clarify... only the bulb should light up but the adjacent bumper also fires?.. Remember that a switch only runs the circuit to ground, so if what I read is the case then there is a common ground for the coil on RHS bumper and the lamp on the bumper in question.. is there a common driver IC or 7XXX buffer that is common to both?

The light issue is with the left bumper and when the ball runs over the left lane switch above the bumpers it should light this left bumper but on occasion (approximately 50% of the time) it fires the right bumper. Not the light but the bumper, which obviously shouldn't happen regardless of which rollover it hits. Pretty weird really.
