Bally Camelot em
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:42:36 PM »
Hoping some one can help me out. My machine burnt out a flipper coil big time  last week end . Replaced it with a new one .I cant seem to set it up properly. It chatters thus heating up the coil . I have tried adjusting the switch but seen to be going around in circles. I look at the other flipper , which is working , i cant work out what I am doing wrong. I am afraid of burning out another coil. I assume the original fault which took out the first coil is still there. I upgraded both the flippers about 3 months ago. Tipping i stuffed something up then but it has just come to a head. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

End of Stroke switch is dirty, worn or needs adjustment.

With the game off, manually move the the good flipper and observe the gap in the switch - as in "when" it opens and adjust the faulty EOS to open at the same time or travel.

Yep..EOS is misadjusted. These actually need a bit of tension on them to work properly so make sure the short arm is pushing well against the long... but obviously not so much that the switch doesn't open properly which in itself can lead to "chatter"

Thx guys for your quick feedback.  I have adjusted the eos trying to stop the chatter. Looking at the other flipper, which is working fine, they look exactly the same. I understand this cant be.I will keep trying. I suppose another thing which is maybe worth mentioning is that coil that I changed over has a different lug layout. The old one has 3 lugs top to bottom with what looks like the common in the center, a large and a smaller coil, main coil and secondary im thinking?. The newbie has three lugs across the top . Assuming the middle is still the common, The left and right was an educated guess based on the lay out..Maybe I stuffed that up and this is causing me heart ache. Life was simpler before pinballs :)

Hi Lanternua, the center lug in not common. Have a look at the animation on my website, it will point you in the right direction. Have a look at the wiring colours on the working/good fliipper and note where the common is connected.

Thx heaps Greg ! It is a great help. The flipper is energizing. I cannot seem to find the sweet spot at the end of stroke. I have cleaned, filed the switch.Changed the switch compared the travel with the right side ,( which works fine). It chatters big time at the eos.
The scenarios are:
1.eos switch on , flipper works fine. No good obviously as it will fry the coil.
2.eos gapped to around 2-3mm... At eof serious arching thus chatter
3.eos gapped > 3mm Still chatters as eos seems comes into play too early.

I cant seem to get enough clearance which is why it is arching i reckon.

To me it looks like it should be an easy fix which frustrates the  bejesus out of me.

cheers Paul

Paul, seems that you may have the common connected on the opposite side lug to where it should be. The common will be the wire wound on the coil which of a thicker gauge.

I didn't have time when posting last night to clarify what I had said in the previous post. There are 2 sets of winding on the coil. The common lug will be the one where the 2 sets of windings on the coil connect (One thick the other of thinner gauge). What I believe is happening is your common wire is only connecting to one set of windings through the EOS. When pushing the flipper button, the coil on the EOS circuit is energising & immediately de-energising creating arching and chattering.

Thanks again for your reply ..... Might of sorted it. When the first coil decided to fry i replaced it with a second hand one i picked up locally ,( new ones only in the US ,it is a AF-26-750/31-900) . It would appear that the replacement has its own little problems.  I mounted it on the other flipper and the good one on the side where i was having problems and the good coil over to the bad side. The fault followed the coil. The side where I was having problem worked perfectly. Looks like i have to import some parts from the US. Thanks again for all your efforts. I will let you know how it ends up. Regards Paul
