R.I.P Phil Hughes
« on: November 27, 2014, 09:35:59 PM »
A life cut far too short through a tragic accident.
I had the privilege of umpiring and socialising with Phil on many occasions, he was a fantastic cricketer and a top shelf young man.
It's a timely reminder to live life to the full each and every day.
RIP.

As a child, I used to sit in the lounge room, glued to the TV watching Lillee and Thomson bowl bouncers at Viv Richards who wore a cap to keep the sun out of his eyes. Times have changed since then. I didn't think a tragic event like this would ever happen nowadays. Kids at all levels wear all the protective gear. It was a freak accident. I feel for the bowler, "bouncers" are part of the game. "Everyone" cricketer has faced a bouncer.

But a man died playing an international sport, in a freak accident. An absolute tragedy. I'm still in shock.

My son-in-law played a couple of seasons with Phil at the Redbacks (he didn't make the grade in the end), I felt really saddened by this tragedy especially the personal connection to my son-in-law.
