Raceway Quarantine Cabinet Respray
« on: March 21, 2020, 09:33:46 PM »
Most people would be sad and upset about their holiday to bali getting cut short then having to spend 2 weeks in quarantine at home.      Not me never been so happy finally     some pure Daniel time...

We got the notification to get home ASAP and I already knew about the quarantine so I got to work piece of together a list of supplies for my son to get me before we got home and he moved out,

While everyone else was sticking up on toilet paper and canned food my list was

THINNERS
PAINT STRIPPER
SANDING DISKS
MASKING TAPE  ETC

HAHAHA

So I arrived home all my goodies where waiting on the floor of the Loungeroom.

Day 1 we unpacked I mowed the lawns then shuffled the shed so I could get out raceway

Day 2
I stripped out the cabinet and backbox  the side rails on these are not like regulars side rails and where a bitch to get off they have a piece is crappy bloat wood to fill out the strange shaped rails there must be a reason for them but I can’t work it out

The raised pieces under the rails finally revealed that the fame had webbing originall it had been painted over several times over the years.

Cleaned out the cracks and broken corners Glue and clamps over night ready for sanding in the morning

Day 3
Before I go into the next step I’m not a fan of restorations that look perfect I much prefer an original game that has character of a 50 year old game  not one that looks brand new with 3 inches of clear the cabinet looked ok in the photos but one pass with an orbital sander and this is all that was left

The red had been repainted and must have stopped it flaking off,

Cabinet was stripped to reveal more damage  so that was all repaired,
The game was found standing on its front door standing in some dry mud so the front ply had started to seperate and around the coin door had been damaged but I forgot to take a photo of the damage,

The reason it was on its face the cabinet has a section recessed for the animated Backbox to sit so it won’t stand on its bum I used a jack to balance it to do the resin repairs

Day 4 (I think? it’s becoming a blur)

Found some graffiti scratched into the cab that I kinda liked plan was to keep it and a few of the bumps and scrapes but the first coat of primer and that plan changed hahaha I’m still not after a mirror finish cabinet but this thing had been to hell and back and not to mention the crappy timber quality and pieced together cabinet

Ran out of bloody primer and being stuck at home i could wait till Monday for my son to head to Darby’s or switch primer so that’s what I did,

Still needs some more prep work but fingers crossed tomororow I’ll be able to get the cabinet in white

Day 5
More prep work and another coat of primer  then a light scuff before applying the white

Then comes my least favourite part the webbing

  Hopefully add some color tomorrow

Is the speckle a trade secret or can you describe the method?
Been trying to think how i'd do it besides the flick a brush method.

Straight paint (not thinned)
Gravity feed gun (modified)
Adjust the pressure till your happy

The biggest trick and hardest part is tightening the sphincter and getting the balls to point the gun at the freshly painted cabinet and pull the trigger because it will either finish it or f**k it

Day 6
Dragged out the cabinet tracings I made about 3 years ago when I bought the paint hahahah,

Marked out all the artwork and started masking then realised crap no newspaper or anything and junk mail seems to have vanished like the toilet paper.

Couldn’t just jump in the car and go buy a paper so I had to get drastic and sacrificed a street machine magazine from the collection

The original plan was to get a set of steel stencils laser cut as I have a second cabinet to paint at some stage but you can’t plan for the end of the world so I just made do with what I had on hand

Worst part about a freshly painted cab is it makes the rest look like crap sadly the Backglass is faded but it will have to do

I’m unsure if I’ll continue with this or start the next cabinet all the little pieces can be done anytime but cabinet restos take time which I think I should make the most of while I have it,

Not a whole lot to update well nothing exciting piecing it back together slowly,

Paint stripped the legs and door panel beater the door back roughly into shape hopefully enough to make it presentable,

Headbox and cabinet are both back together and wired up back door is repainted and webbed

Hopefully polish up the other side rail tommorrow aswell then it’s ready for glass
