Scared Stiff Skull Pile LED's - done - but confused?
« on: September 28, 2009, 04:40:23 PM »
Curious if anyone knows…….

I followed these instructions and did the Skull Pile LED upgrade on my Scared Stiff.
http://www.marvin3m.com/ss/index.htm
They all successfully light up / flash / chase etc in attract mode  and also light throughout gameplay.

BUT does anyone know exactly how they are MEANT to light in gameplay itself………I assumed that a single pair of eyes would have lit for EACH goal achieved, meaning that when you get to Scared Stiff Mode that ALL 6 skulls have lit eyes? Mine don’t operate that way in gameplay , even though I followed the wiring instructions in the upgrade exactly.

I am not really bothered by such a small technicality as it looks heaps better than before , I am just curious to know how they are meant to be.

I also used Extraballs method of painting the flashers ( 2 behind the skull pile ) with glass paint ( red in this case ) and the skull pile now has a nice amber / red glow too.

Candles will be yellow ( and hopefully lit and flickering ) by tomorrow as well ^^^

The way I read the instructions - each tale should be lit in the skull to correspond to the playfield.

How is yours different ?

Hi Wotto
I installed the multi-coloured skull pile LEDs on my SS quite some time ago.
Nino is correct, during game play each of the skull's 6  pairs of eyes light up and the colour corresponds with the currently lit insert(s) on the "Six Tales Of Terror" p/f panel.
I bought mine as a complete set from Freeplay Amusements along with the very cool Dancing Boogiemen kit which works perfectly too.
I can't think why your skull pile LEDs are not performing properly.

Ah - its OK - man they light up and look WAY WAY better than before ......Nino, whats happening is that they light up in gameplay for about 3 of the modes and then change when you get a 4th mode etc, but they still flash and stuff as the game plays and they go out in Scared Stiff mode when it is meant to be dark etc - so its all good ( I guess ) ............heres some before and after pics for anyone that hasnt seen this before.

Heres the plain old skull pile - no 'eyes' as such and holes cut for candle flames

Heres how they look when the game is on- they have 2  x flashers behind them that run occassionally - they are white 906 globes.

Heres all my new 'eyes' lit

But then I got the bug and wanted the candles lit - so I got some 3mm yellow perspex and cut it to shape and glued it in, I then wired 2 x orange LED globes to the Beasts Eyes so the candles 'flash'......I then drilled holes in the backboard and glued em in.

And as mentioned earlier , by painting the original  clear flashers with red glass paint I got this red effect.....all in all giving a lot more colour in an otherwise dead corner....

FREE OFFER
I still have some Red LEDS for skulls eyes, some diodes and some yellow perspex left over - so if any other SS owners want to attempt this mod , send me a PM and I will give you these for FREE.....all you need then is wire and some resistors  and a couple of orange LED globes ( about $10.00 all up )and a few hours patience.

I have the colored skull pile LEDs, which match the color of the insert they light up with.

They look good, someone made a controller board with the candle LEDs that made them flicker etc - but the kit has been out of production for some time I believe. I keep hoping they will make them again.

A scared stiff is next in line for restoration after my first CFTBL project is finished.

I tried to get contact with Nelson Amusements for the controller board for the candles to flicker, but didn't get a respons  !!! The website states that they will do a third run if there's enough interest.... Maybe try hard together  !@#
