Payment methods to China

Hi guys, I need a bit of assistance...

I need to pay someone in China via one of the following payment methods - western union, bank transfer or money gram.

Which one is the easiest and how do I go about doing it?

If you are with CBA and have NetBank, you can do a bank transfer through that.

Not sure if it's more expensive than WU etc.

Bank transfer to China is $30 - youll need a mediatory bank to transfer to in USA as Aus doesnt deal in Yen, Youll also need info on who you are paying, their bank ( account and address), business address, telephone... i think thats it all covered, but each time i attempt to do it there is a piece missing.
WU can be done online and is $28.. youll need personal name to transfer to. WU will ring you to confirm payment - be warned - they have zero sense of humour, jokes and laughter at the ridiculous steps you go through are not permitted.
Money Gram goes in the post yes? - so is slow, but probably easier.

They can set up a Paypal account but it costs them quite a bit - some US$50

Thanks Gavin. I see WU offer payment online with a phone call required in the middle of it all. Sounds like the way to go.

I'd say Bank Transfer. You have to provide your bank with all of the supplier's details, and they basically verify the details on their system. So you know the money is going where it is supposed to. Go to the bank - don't do it online - as the teller asked me a few questions and was able to identify the Bank account and verify while I was there. So I knew everything was ok. Takes 48 hours to clear into the supplier's back account.

Depends on how much??? I transfer all the time to PRC (I have an office there). For smaller amounts up to AU$400 I just get my Chinese secretary to draw from an ATM using a card I have given her. The bank fees are AU$5 per transaction (max transaction around AU$400 depending on exchange rate).

She then direct deposits to the company account I wish to pay - be aware there is ususally a bank fee to deposit to an account EVEN if it is at a branch of the same bank! About 40RMB is normal.

I generally pay either paypal (fees are a downfall but its safe) or international / overseas bank transfer. The supplier should provide you with a bank code that you enter to automatically find the right bank...

I just found out that I can do it online through my bank for a fee of $20 so it looks like I found the answer. Thanks to all for your help.

My bank charges the same fee and I reckon its worthwhile.
