Space Invaders - Opening the Front Glass ?
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:25:56 PM »
Looking for Space Invaders experts.....

How do i open the Front Glass to change lamps?

The glass has a channel-lift rail, and it lifts maybe 5mm up, but not enough to come out.

When i open the entire door, i'm faced with potentially removing the backglass to also get access to the globes.
I can't see any form of lock-mechanism that stops the FRONT glass lifting out.

Any clues before i bust something?

Marty.

There is a slide which increases the glass clearance on the top when it is pulled towards the back of the cabinet. I will get some photos tonight for you. J.D>

Marty, sorry about that messy quote.

Is it the same as the model in my photo?

Hi there. Be careful when you open the backglass door with the 2 glasses inside it is very heavy and puts a lot of weight on the wooden backglass frame as it swings out. I usually rope someone in to help me when I need to get the back glass out.

There are the 2 mentioned metal tabs inside the BB door at the top above the rear BG which you need to slide out towards you to give you the clearance to move the front BG up. If the guys are able send you a picture it will make sense. Good luck.

Sheesh, it's almost too easy to open once you know hehehehehehe.

Here's pics of the metal tabs for others to see....
( only 1 tab shown of the 2 ).

Tab in the "IN" position (front-glass LOCKED)

Tab in the "OUT" position (front-glass UN-LOCKED)

Thanx Guys,
Marty.

Sort of on the same subject guys....
The backbox of my new Space Invaders does not have a lock assembly on the right hand side.  I cannot locate any pics of how this is supposed to lock in place.  Does anyone have a pic of the backbox lock machanism and assembly (lock / bracket, and whatever is needed on the backbox door to catch the lock) please.  I think I am missing a few pieces here and will probably need the whole mechanism

Does anyone also know where I can buy these?
Regards

Unfortunately, I don't have photos of mine (when I owned it), but I recall that there was a lock that may have been a standard 1 1/8 inch lock with a fitting (tongue) that was not standard. You will need a photo of the assembly, but I think it should be straight forward to set up. I have a Xenon in storage with a similar arrangement - so I might have a look at that over the weekend.

Thanks Nino.  I got hold of a page from the Bally 1980 parts catalog and the parts are the following:

Lock Plate:  P-3473-18
Lock:  M-281-73

However I cannot find these anywhere online or any reference to a compatible part from Marco's etc or locally

The lock may be this one - http://www.pbresource.com/locks.html

1 1/8 inch. These are used on normal head locking mechanisms.

Those part numbers won't really reference to anything made these days, therefore, you will need an equivalent. You could shoot an email to PBR ?

The lock is longer in the barrel than the standard door lock, i think Nino is correct on the size. I picked the new lock up from Marco when i got the pin.

Still haven't fit the lock yet, although i did find time to led the infinity backglass. NICE!!

You can certainly see the difference to the playfield.

Nice work, Tim, I think this one is definitely one where LEDs make an improvement.
