HELP!!!!! Buck Rogers Outhole Kicker
« on: December 12, 2009, 05:26:16 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm not a techo and I'm looking for some advice.

I have a Buck Rogers (from my brother who has not used it in years). Everything works except the outhole kicker. If you push the ball out with your finger, it plays well. I looked at the driver board and the outhole kicker transistor (TIP222) looked black. I replaced it.

The replacement melted when I powered it up.

I don't know what to check next. Am I looking for a short under the playfield?

Any help is greatfully appreciated.

Regards

Gordo....

First thing to check is the coil resistance and the Diode.  If you have a multim meter set it on ohms and test the resistance between the two solder lugs.  Unsolder the diode and test it also

Also check the connector between the MPU board and the driver board, make sure the connector pins are good, ie not corroded or pushed in. it is THIS connector that causes most of the problems with system1 games that have coils and/or lamps locking on.

Hi,

I checked between the soldered lugs. I set my multi-meter to ohms at 200 (as nothing else had any reading), and it read 1.1 to 1.2.

I checked the leads and they are fine.

Thanks for your help guys.

Does this reading give any clues?

thats too low a reading! sounds like a shorted coil diode, or the coil itsself. cut one lead of the diode from the coil and measure across the diode. should read high resistance one way and read completely open the other. Im guessing the diode is shorted, if thats the case it'll still read really low resistance Both ways.

Im not completely sure but the coil should measure between 10 - 15 ohms... certainly no less than 10 ohms.

Sounds like a shorted coil.

Check the resistance according to this chart ;

http://www.flippers.com/coil-resistance.html

Look up the coil part number, and the corresponding resistance is to the right.

Sounds like a coil/diode prob as mentioned....

On another note :
I have pulled apart a Buck Rogers Playfield, i may just have the exact coil you need, in case you can't find a NEW one at MarkC's place.

Do you know what coil and diode it should be? I cannot read on the coil. It is an allied brand, however the numbers cannot be read (except the last numbers appear to be 94).

Thanks again

Part number is A-16570 for the coil (original Gtb), the diode is a 1N4007

If that is the case, the reading should be;

A-16570     GOTTLIEB     REG     15R5     27     1450

15.5 Ohms - So it is the cause of your issue, it seems   *%*

Hey Guys,

The machine is working like new.

It is fast and smooth to play. After following everyone's advice I got it working. I replaced the coil, diode and transitor. I noticed the board was very worn where the plugs pushed on, so I spent the time and resoldered them and checked every single plug (found a couple broken or very close to broken).

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond. It's great to fix something yourself.

Regards

Gordo......

Well done, it is very satisfying to fix a machine yourself.

What you need: patience, a soldering iron, a multimeter and AP. That should get you through most problems.
