Repro Gorgar bumper caps
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:13:11 AM »
Hey guys, for those of you who don't visit the other forum much (or at all), I'm having a crack at reproducing Gorgar bumper caps.

Stage 1 of remaking the caps. Test fit is fine, caps still need to be trimmed. Oh, and they are translucent, just like the originals. About to start the artwork.

These caps are blank because I could not source a Gorgar cap in good condition, otherwise they would have been a lot faster to make. Pity really, but no one offered to lend me a cap in good nick.

Since they are blanks, they will fit any Williams of that era that used that particular style of cap. The artwork will have to be added for each one.

All will be revealed in a few days, if I am happy with the process and end result.

All will be posted here under first post in the next few days. Stay tuned.

Looking good so far - curious as to why you did not just buy blank caps?

cheers

Top notch Brad  ^^^

Keep the updates coming - Be nice if other caps could be done using the same process - FLASH caps are always worn out and faded too.

Er im a little confused..... are these made by yourself from a mold? If so can we see the plastic making process at all.. most home made plastics are too unstable

They are opaque   i.e. They dont let light through.  They need to be translucent.

Hi,

I have a set of these caps in NOS condition and would be happy to participate in getting reproductions happening or even a personalised version.

I am in Sydney, please PM me if I can assist.

Stage 1
Mould made of silicone.  Some finished but un-trimmed caps as well.

Caps are pains in the ars* to make.  There was a lot of trial and error getting the transluceny just right.  Finally there after multiple failures.  Made from a 2 part clear epoxy.  Dyed with a couple of drops of white dye.

Test fit is fine, caps still need to be trimmed.   About to start the artwork.

Stage 2
Decals have been printed on nice thick, red adhesive vinyl, though not exact (compare to original) they are fairly close and will do me fine.  This cap was a reject due to the defect in the centre (a bubble).

The black face on the cap is the next process in the works.  This will not be a decal.

All 3 caps done.  Last step is the face stamp.

Stage 3

Had the stamp made up, is visible in the pic.  Inking these caps is problematic.  Consistent results are a little hard.  More R&D needed for a second good set but for now I am happy with these prototypes!

They look great !

Stamp ! Unbelievable !

What are you looking at getting something like that stamp made !

Do you need to take them ( the stamp place )  the artwork and they create a stamp from it ? How does the process work ?

Amazing that you would go to those lengths to get this right!

I am impressed.
