What are you currently listening to ? (Part ii)
« on: September 03, 2010, 11:55:28 PM »
I did this a while ago, and like most people, I go through "phases". I listened to Buckethead's catalogue for months and became totally immersed, and then suddenly, I just wanted to listen to progressive music again. Then I went back to basics and listened to my "roots" - 70's Hard Rock. Somehow - I ALWAYS return to my roots. But I never stray far from Hard Rock and Metal.

what are you guys currently listening to as you play or work on your games ?

Here's mine ;

Dream Theater - Wither

These guys are simply the BEST musicians on the Planet. Whenever you want to listen to music that you "concentrate" on - These guys cannot be equalled. Rush pioneered Progressive Metal, Queensryche refined it and Dream Theater mastered it. My favorite album at the moment

In case you get the "embedded" error -
&feature=player_embedded

Heaven and Hell - Neon Knights

Still can't believe Ronnie James Dio is gone. No doubt jamming with Randy Rhodes, Phil Lynott and John Bonham - But this song IS Heavy Metal.

Boston - More than a feeling

Oh the memories - What a GREAT band. AOR meets progressive rock with one of the finest debut albums of all time. Just as good "live" as in the studio

Rush - Early Distant Warning

I don't know anyone else who listens to Rush - But this is the song I'd play to anyone who has never heard them. Canada's finest musicians that inspired countless bands.

Queen - Hammer to Fall

Englands finest live band, and one of the most underrated songs in their catalogue. Always been my favorite Queen song - Heavy and anthemic

KISS - Detroit Rock City

The greatest live band in history, and the first ever "vision" I saw on television in 1978 (Rock Arena on CH2). The consecutive shows they played at the Budokan in 1977 broke the Beatle's attendance records. Just an awesome concert of an awesome live band reaching their peak.

Interested to hear what others are listening to ? Often wondered what pinheads listen to while playing and working on pins..

ELVIS - The SUN years....gone right back to when i first started to listen to music.. my fav track of all time "Blue Moon of kentucky"... love the whole sound of this album with its unintentional "echo" due to poor studio acoustics.. even on CD, the "valve warmth" comes through.

Django Reinhardt - jazz guitarist...

On the lookout for HAWKWIND on CD

Think i need to go to a REAL music shop for anything ....... fed up with the generic crap stores that are supposed to be "MUSIC" shops

Absolutely love this one from Dream Theatre

Also anything from Pink Floyd's Division Bell - love the guitar intro in this one

Just found out the the Gunners are coming to Townsville later this year - dunno whether its worth going, are their new line up/concerts pretty ordinary and will it spoil some of their awesome albums?

I've seen/heard some live stuff from them which has some parts where Axl is singing way off tune or the guitar is out a fair bit.

".. and Justice for all" is their finest work. "One" is an all time favorite of mine, the video portrays the reality and casualty of war. Very confronting. The "Black Album" is a classic, but it "Commercialised" Metallica. Thankfully, these days, fans see it as a change in direction and every band goes through some sort of change. I will add "..and justice for all" to the playlist - I still have the double album somewhere !

"Hollow Years" has an incredible intro and works up to John Petrucci's solo. It's little wonder that he is recognised as one of the best guitarists of our time

Almost forgot - Pink Floyd are a HUGE infuence on Dream Theater. "Lifting Shadows off a dream" = "Comfortably Numb".

Gunners ALMOST got their "vibe" back, but Axl has lost the plot. They looked like a travelling Circus with Buckethead and Robin Fink in the band - But they sounded awesome live

I always go back to guitar music that doesn't hide behind distortion and down tuning (come to think of it don't think I ever left %.%).

One of the best twin guitar bands of all time that sweat and bleed their music. Don't see much of this stuff anymore cause so many bands (big and small) simply can not play it, especially with this type of delivery. Record executives from the US attended this show in 82 and were speechless, nothing plastic here.
