Your balls
« on: October 17, 2010, 10:52:22 AM »
I just discovered that some balls I had been storing are showing signs of rust @.@
I had them in a sealed zip bag with obviously some cheap ass greasy crap ^.^
So I was after some better ideas as to how you look after your balls @@^
Cheers
Bruce

their are a couple of spray lubs that dont dry out (at least quicly)
Inox for one comes to mind to try.
(might even try a lanolin (sheep ref) one)

Then wipe off and polish when ready to use.

Used mutliglis on ming, but prob not readly available dow corning product.

I work with big injection molding tools - the faces are that shiny, the thing will rust if you leave it open for 8 hours exposed to atmosphere.

WD-40 / CRC would do at a pinch. (CRC Marine is the better product IMO)

I found INOX brilliant for low-odor stuff (I.E. inside doors etc) - but I reckon it dries too quick?

Industrial / bearing supply shops will sell you anti-rust spray - this is slightly tacky and sticks to a polished surface.

Chain lube is very sticky if you can get hold of some?

If it's in a sealed bag - just drown it with whatever you like - squeeze out the air in the bag before sealing.

Why is it called PMS?

Just get a big tub of "homeBrand" petroleum jelly or Vaseline and store em in that.

They will then be effectively suspended in lube and will not rust.

That's exactly what I was thinking, good idea

Chain lube is available at any motorcycle shop in several different brands. It is sticky and horrible but your balls will stay nice and shiny underneath. It's always good to get them out for a nice polish every now and then  <.>

I swear by CRC as well and yeah I would say CRC Marine is probably better but the normal stuff is fine.  I believe that CRC is diesel based whereas WD-40 is water based - that what I was told many moons ago anyway and I have never been able to get it confirmed or denied.

new motor oil in plastic bottle/container(the one the oil comes in) , give them a shake once in a blue moon. they just stay new. pop one out , wipe it , brand new. motor oil will not evaporate away.

Fully submerged like this is the only way to do it!

I have bicycle bearings & bearing cups/fittings stored in a plastic container filled with motor oil....they've sat there for 15+ years and still chrome & shiney like the day i buried them :-)

I used to do the whole plastic bag and spray/lube, but it always thins away, you find the oil is maintained in the bag, but not on the object.

Oh, another thing.....when putting them in a container (or original motor-oil bottle), throw a rag or sponge in the bottom, it'll ensure the balls/parts aren't sitting on the bottom of the container, thus fully surrounded by goop.

WD40 is fish oil....

All this talk of balls, are they ok to leave in the machine for long periods of time?
Whip them out for a polish once a year?
