Transformer testing?

Hi Guys this is actually a jukebox question but I'm sure the same rules apply.   Is there a way to test a transformer?

I have a jukebox that ha had me stumped for ages.  Everything works except the magazine shutters when it's turning.   All voltages are present and correct I've sent all te boards over to Tasmania to be tested and repaired by the professionals I've even had known working motors sent for test with the same results.

   Today I had a brainwave and hooked up another transformer with the same output voltage to the motor and it worked perfectly can a transformer loose there strength or Amps if that makes sense and if so how can this be tested?

Daniel,  The transformer may be braeking down under load.  Test with your digital multimeter on Amps setting.  Make sure the leads are in the right spot (different terminal on meter to when testing voltage, continuity or resistance) and that you test it in series (both leads of meter in series with the motor , i.e one lead on positive from transformer and other on to motor.  You could do this with both transformers to see differance.

you can always test it unloaded and then under load.
test the voltage that controls the motor with out the motor connected and then with the motor connected.
And you can always test the current draw as per dean's post and see what current the motor draws on the second working transformer compared to the suspected faulty transformer.

Its not a bad looking juke.   Would look great with a flat screen mounted in it but the owner wanted to keep it original which is why its a nightmare

Well ive got the old girl up and running it was the transformer had the right voltages just not enough grunt left to run it.    Had to kind of dodge it up using a new transformer from jaycar and a relay from an Em gottlieb not perfect but it's up and running.     

  This thing has been a nightmare for over 12 months now so it's been running now for over an hour without a problem so I'm happy enough to send it back to it's owner.
