Aussie Pinball 10,000 posts review

and a little bit of History..

I DID write this last week, and I've just been reminded that we in fact have 11,000 posts - But here it is anyway ;

A while ago, Creech set up small Pinball forum on the inventforums Forum hosting site. It was very thin with security and updates, but it provided pinheads with a forum that catered for all Pinheads. The site was going along fine until the Spambots found us and then we were heavily spammed with porn. It was a huge problem for us, as we had spent a fair bit of time working on the site. No matter what we did, we were continually targeted. It really spoiled the experience. However, both Creech and I enjoyed the experience of running the site, even if it was for a short period of time.

After closing down the inventforum site, and moving on, we were often asked if we would ever open the site up again, or start a new Forum. It seemed that inventforum had the content, but not the functions of a commercially hosted site. Creech looked into organizing a new site, with all the "bells and whistles" and security of a commercial Forum. After sending me links of the two forum platforms, we decided on "Simple Machines".

We discussed the costings of the site - which was surprising cheaper than we had thought, and figured that we would try it out for the first year - out of our own pockets. So that's what we did ! Effectively, the concept, direction and ownership were in our hands for the first year, and if it did not work out - we would bear the costs and the criticism. But it is the Aussie Way - Have a go !

The site started slowly, but the intent was always to have QUALITY members and content, not 6000 members with 20 active posters. The content was to be more technical, and the direction was to be decided by the members. So we figured that we were unique, and hopefully, that would be our ticket to having an informative site of like minded pinheads. Sharing information - whether it be Restorations, repairs, tips or just discussion between the seasoned pinheads and Newbies alike.

The addition of the Coconut Island project to our site was the first of many benefits to us. Hosting their forum on AP has been fantastic for both of us and we eagerly await the premier of the game in the not too distant future. Nucore also jumped on board with weekly updates on their ground breaking project, and we were honored with our website featured on the credits of their software.

The sponsorship idea was to promote industry and help our membership with product and services. Naturally, it will assist with the costs, and it will enable us to continue the site for years past the first year that Creech and I covered. Having a look at our Sponsors, we have the industry leaders behind us ; Child's Amusements, PSP, RTBB, Pinball-Fixers, Neon Planet and Fipper Rescue. We also have some very talented restorers, artists and repairers. There are surprises in the pipeline that we are working on - Like the Pinball Expo amongst other things.

Looking back to when we started, and now that we have our 10,000 post - We can safely say that we are achieving our goals of having quality members and a friendly pinball forum.

From Tony and I - We would like to thank every contributing member (lurkers - start posting!), our Development guys and our Sponsors for making our site grow from a small idea into Australia's leading Pinball forum !

I reckon you have got a good thing going here - the helpful advice is great, the restoration threads are inspiring (sometimes awe-inspiring), and the community feel is right up there.

.. my only gripe is that its too good and im on here when i should be invoicing.

Remember Gav- work pays for pins....work pays for pins

Work only pays for pins if you invoice the work out (where's the smiley for cracking the whip)!

Here here. Well done guys, it's great to see so many pinheads in the one forum, unencumbered by politics and arrogance, genuinely welcoming new members and giving all with fair comment a fair go to participate.

I too would like to ask the lurkers to come forth and reveal yourselves - we all have our pinball story to tell, and many of us here would love to read it and get to know you. It doesn't matter if your collection is one Gottlieb System 1, or a dozen "cookie cutters", you have something to share if you are here - the love of this very special game we are all trying to keep alive.

Yes, well done Tony & Nino,

Thanks to you guys I have really got the pinball bug bigtime, have been thinking about pinball more than sex lately.

cant wait for the first AP meet

Mark,

It would be good to have this meet at Childs when your next container arrives of ss's and em's with ap members getting the first dibs. This would be good for those of us who are interstaters.

Well done Tony & Nino, I am thankful that you guys "gave it a go" and produced such an awesome forum. I am a n00b in the pinball world but I have felt welcome on this site and I continue to learn more about pinballs every day. Thanks to everyone for making this such a great resource  @@*

Well done Tony and Nino

Great achievement for such a short time

We are proud to be sponsors of a forum that helps further the hobby(aka addiction) of pinball and one that also relegates politics to the trash bin that it should be in.

The site strives to inform and nourish the "hobby" and succeeds well in that area.

Keep up the good work guys.

Al the members that contribute need a pat on the back and a well done as well for helping to make this forum what it is.

Congrats again   @@* $%$

I would love to do it on a container day and make all you guys unload it ......
they do cost extra for weekend drop off and we normally get them here as soon as we can .
not sure we could hold off unloading one , if it came on say the friday  ....

as soon as we catch up here we will have a meet
all members from AP will be welcome and even AA members too ( geoff is still a member there )
I dont see why everyone cant talk and have a beer together .
If i make it to expo  i will be looking up a few AA members and having a drink with them and everyone  **) **) **)

but back on topic   ( i will start a thread soon re the MEET  once i work out a day)

many thanks and kudos  needs to go to the owners here ,  Tony and Nino . without them none of us would be here
and to see the site grow as it has over 1000PLUS posts  in last 6 days  wow all the new members , and some real good info on here for all of us

Well said Nino, and thanks to both you and Tony for initially paying for, creating and managing a great forum for all of us pinball heads to come to.

I thinks it's great that AP has passed the 11,000 posts mark in such a short time, and with the vast majority of the posts about pinball.

I agree with the comment about the lurkers coming out and making some posts... Please make this place your own as well guys! Especially anyone who is new to pinball and learning to repair their own machines - the more questions you ask, the more help you will get, and this in turn will make Aussie Pinball a great repository of information for everyone here to share and learn from!

Thanks for the kind words people - But the comments made on behalf of the Admin Team were more of a "Thank You" from "US" in recognition for making our task easier.

The thanks I get (personally) is to see the site basically "run itself" by the members. The Pinball community is thriving at the moment and we need to keep the interest level up, and keep our machines running for future generations.

I just want to echo Nino's thoughts. Thanks to all for making this site great. We've put the framework in place and now our members are building it up. It's been fun setting it up and watching it grow in such a short space of time.

Here's to the future of AP.  $#$
