Bally Skateball Restore II
« on: May 02, 2012, 11:10:25 PM »

This is the second Bally Skateball I've restored over the years. A rare title, which has a Skateboard theme which makes it less popular that other games that have the same playability - namely Fathom. This playfield is a cross between WMS Flash and Bally Fathom. It's a "poor man's Fathom", without multiball and in-line targets. An under rated title which is great fun to play.

This particular game is going to the same owner as the Fathom I restored.

Condition Report

Playfield - 8/10. It is in REALLY nice condition with no major wear spots. Factory applied mylar which will remain. It is in great condition. For an original playfield, it is really nice. Top of the playfield had no mylar and there are wear spots which I will attend to and apply mylar.

Backglass - 9/10 - Just some minor paint lift in the top left hand corner.

Cabinet - 8/10 - slight fade, but no structural damage. I will be repairing the head where there are done scratches and scuff marks. Door is straight.

Electronics - 7/10 - CPU board has some corrosion, but will boot. Some hacks on the power supply, but they are easy fixes.

Overall, the game is in excellent condition, and I've already ordered most of the parts.

Here's some pictures of the game "as is" !

Teardown

wear around top pop left pop bumper

Factory mylar has saved this playfield

Rebuillding of the mechanisms

Every moving part is removed, cleaned, repaired or replaced. It looks tedious and time consuming, but it means the game will have years of trouble free operation. There are three drop target banks.

Cabinet

Filthy - as usual. Everything removed and cleaned. Some SHOCKing electrical work done which really scared me. The line filter and varistor were removed.

This is BAD NEWS and needs to be addressed.

Filthy Cabinet -

Clean Cabinet -

End of part 1 !

To me this is a confused theme that couldn't quite decide if it wanted to be a skateboard theme or a surfing theme!

Interesting to hear that it is a good player.

You are right on the theme with surfing graphics in the centre but then skateboarding is referred to as side walk surfing so to a surfer who skateboards it makes sense.

I have 3 playfields and I want to customize one where the wave is turned ino a pool wall as well as modifying most of the plastics to be ramp and pool themed designs because in th US in he 80's they had droughts in California so people drained their pools and they thn become skateboarding heaven.

Worth a game, it is a good player.

Looks like a really interesting game - especially both the outlanes, and 3 sets of targets.

Looking forward to the progress Nino.

I prefer leaving cabinets original as long as there is no structural damage, or a large proportion of paint fade or loss. This cabinet was very good except for the backglass surround. Compared to the rest of the game, it was unacceptable. The decision was made not to repaint the entire cabinet, but to make an improvement on the backglass surround.

Here is the damaged areas ;

The inside of the head was fine. I removed the game specific cards (carefully) and sent the scans off to Peter (Inkochnito), as he did not have them on file. All the boards are removed to be rebuilt and tested.

I repaired the damage and masked off all the areas I didn't want to paint.

I used an Acrylic primer / filler and then sanded ready for the topcoat. For the topcoat, I used Automotive Acrylic lacquer. I had the paint color matched by a professional, with a view to matching the darkened worn area of the head rather than the original color, which was inside the head and was a "cleaner" version of the yellow. This means I matched the years of exposure to the original color, which would have been noticeable if I didn't. The end result was a perfect color match to the cabinet "as is". If I was going to fully repaint the cabinet, then I would match the original factory color. Thankfully, I had one day of sunshine to finish this off !

Looks slightly "lighter" in this picture, but that was because the area behind the surround was "in the shadow". It is a good match, and a massive improvement. Will look better once the backglass is mounted.

Here's the inside of the head after reassembly. The aluminum backing has been polished, along with the board mounting brackets. Everything was dismantled and cleaned. A new backbox lock was installed as the original barrel was broken.

The tilt mechanism was rewired correctly. One of many "hacks" on this game. Polished and cleaned, it WILL tilt if the player gets too excited ! There's a problem with this picture. The ground strap was severed at some stage. Not good ! Will need to be fixed.

Earlier on, I mentioned some serious wiring issues. The original EMI filter was removed, as was the varistor. So I've wired in a new power cord, varistor and EMI filter correctly.

Front door was in VERY good condition. Straight and didn't have any dints, dings or rust.

Dismantled, cleaned and polished. Rewired correctly.

Here's the game as it is today. The boards are currently being rebuilt and "bulletproofed". Playfield progress updates shortly  *%*

No - This was reserved by an astute collector over a year ago. He also owns the Fathom I restored. That's how far behind I am ! But I will catch up now that I have more time.

This is a great game, lots of action throughout the PF.  This is the very 1st pin I purchased (thanks again Marco!), and would be very hard to pry from me.  This is one of two games I have that was restored by Nino.

This is one machine i actually regret selling.  !!!

Marco, you were instrumental in getting me "over the line" with my first purchase, very much appreciated.  Sorry you're missing the game ... btw, I finally cracked your high score.  It took a long, long time, but I've hit just over the 5 mil mark.  Don't know if I'll ever repeat that again.

To me this is a confused theme that couldn't quite decide if it wanted to be a skateboard theme or a surfing theme!

Interesting to hear that it is a good player.

I'm pretty sure you would enjoy this game, IMHO it's a top game.

What did you use to polish the ground plane aluminium in the headbox?

Brasso. Took a while to get all the blackness off the aluminum, but I had removed all the PCB brackets which made it a lot easier. I did it in small sections at a time.
