You’ve done well! (A phrase that annoys me)

‘You’ve done well!’ a phrase that you would either use with a small child, or somebody who has gone beyond expectations

Customers started using this phrase a few years ago after I had served them their food. I know that they did not mean anything but I find the comment condescending.

Today, I filled the car up with fuel and paid for it, the guy behind the counter said ‘you’ve done well!’
?huh?
Did I do something extraordinary?

What is wrong with ‘Thank You’ or ‘Have a nice day’?????

Humbug

I am sure he played well
but would have you said the same thing if he had simply cut up the oranges at half time?

maybe the guy behind the counter doesn't have the skills to fill a car with petrol. or maybe he gets so little pay and can't afford a tank full of fuel let alone a car and he was congratulating you on your financial status?
which ever way you look at it the guy behind the counter sounds like a douche  :lol

In "Open All Hours" the great Ronny Barker (as Arkwright) would say to his customers:
"Well done sir . . . and you have been."
"I don't operate on a level playing field"

He is too little to handle sharp knives. *%*
You need a valium and a lie down...much more important things going on then " you have done well".

There's a few contexts that sentence is used, sadly they all suck ;-)

It should ONLY be used to congratulate/encourage someone, for the example above when a kid does well at footy, best on field or whatever.
It should be used to highlight an achievment!

I know people use it to highlight your finacial status, they walk into a lovely home and the first thing said is "Gee, you've done well", or commenting on a new car etc....i HATE that...."i didn't do well", "i worked damn hard" to achieve that car, house whatever...

If anyone said that to me simply for filling petrol (hardly an achievment)? i'd be quite likely to rip his headoff, maybe then i've done well ;-)

Yes , very annoying saying I agree.

The one that pisses me off is "absolutely " used in a situation when a simple "yes " will do.

Are you going to the footy tonight - Absolutely!!
Did you pick up the kids from school - Absolutely !!
Would you like a cup of coffee - Absolutely!!

It sort of supposes that a simple yes is not a good enough answer and may be a bit ambiguous, and that your reply has to be absolute so that no one can be in any doubt as to its truth.
OR
The good old "To be completely honest with you " that people often use , because lets face it in past conversations we have had there have been times when I have been less than truthful with you. Always cracks me up that one, not surprising that its mostly used by politicians.
