Calling all GOTTLIEB owners WORKING!!!!!!
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:02:23 PM »
I have been presetned with a 1962 GOTTLIEB COVER GIRL to fix... game is an odd ball thing. Has custom made cabinet, chrome side rails, brand new PF, New BG... new everything!

Ive been playin g around with it for about an hour tonight wondering whats wrong with it.
PF lights dont work... plug game in and it fires up.. even gives you a game, but then i smell a cooking smell.
Cant find a hot coil anywhere, then all the lights go out.. look at the fuse and its as hot as hell.. and its 20Amp.
So i put a 10A trip switch in its place... turn game on... lights are dim, then after about 20 - 30 secs my switch trips off.
Unplug 1 Jones plug and problem solved... no more tripping... still no PF lights though. So i test for voltage here and i have 30V on both sides of the lamps...LOL.
One of the Jones plugs has been rewired and goes to the flippers, i unplug this and measure voltages TO this plug.... 6.5V...6.5V...6.5V and earth...WTF !@#

Anyway... cut a short story long, i look up this game on IPDB to see if its possible to see how the Jones plugs are wired ( i know... its a long shot!)... what i do see though is that this machine is meant to have 2 Jones plugs in the base.. NOT 3 that i have.
Check other Jones plugs... 30v...30v...30v....30v..115V!!...115V!!!...30V...30V... f**k me  @.@

Well i need help here from owners of early 60's Gottlieb games... FLIPPER CLOWN...OLYMPICS....COVER GIRL.... RACK A BALL..... SWEET HEARTS...SLICK CHICK  etc.

I REALLY need to know what voltages are meant to go to each wire on the Jones plugs... im pretty sure most of this game is correct and solder is obvioulsy 40+ years old. If i can get correct voltages TO the correct plugs i can go from there.
The whole PF has been rewired and somewhere a voltage line for lamps has been used for coils also... that and earth..LOL

Anyone able to help me???

Thanks all.....Gav

Absolutely Millsy.. that would be exactly what i need. Voltages to the plugs may be the same as my Bank A ball... if i can confirm this then i can follow what goes to the PF, Back box etc..

Yes, back box lights up... not sure if the controlled lamps work or not, but general GI lights up.
Single bulb in the cabinet by PLAYS meter also works ( this is the one i watch).
Will take some pictures later today

Thanks Millsy,

Heres what i have... using 0V as reference, voltages are in red.
Note on the top fuse which is for bulbs, the voltage difference is 6V.
It would seem the switches are running on High Tap 26V and 38V = 12V ( hate high tap)
Not sure where the 42V and 20V = 22V are coming from.. but im assuming its being used as coil voltage

Ok... it would help if i used the correct common.. which is where i have 34V.

This game isnt a COVER GIRL... it s a CG playfield and head but the bottom board is from a different machine... i have 3 Jones p[lugs where i should have only 2... the extra plug is being used for flippers only.
My middle Jones plug is whats causing the issues... where it wants to take 6V for lights from doesnt work. If i unplug it and take it from the 6V that is going to the switches with a jumper, then i get PF lights no problems.
I unsoldered where the PF lights go to the PF at the first junction... plugged it back in and it trips at fuse.... this whole plug is wired incorrectly.
Ground for the PF lights is coming from the third Jones plug..
...bloody nightmare.
Looks like i need a COVER GIRL to copy  !@# !@#

I think it would Millsy... im comparing pics of inside the cabinets on IPDB... both look very similar.
The Jones plug in question, im getting some cranky voltages from... namely 69 - 70V on 2 places... need to find out whats going on here as most of my voltages are wandering all over the place as im trying to read them>
I dont know anyone with a Cover Girl either... im comparing to my Bank A ball which is some 3 years later... not sure its much help.

First up... thank you Millsy!!! Thanks for your input mate.. much appreciated!!!

OK... game is now working. Had me going around in circles a bit as some of the mods done to the game led me to believe that the bottom board was from another game.

2 major faults... no PF lights and fuses tripping.
Game would be Ok with just the backbox lights on.. plug in PF and all goes tits up.
I ended up finding some ground wires that had come away from their tabs.. just slid right off. Very hard to see, but i just noticed 1 on the score motor.. fixed that, checked the rest of the connections and another just slid off.
Also found one on the logic relay bank under the PF.

Well ground is always a good thing to find when you have current ramping up, so i plug her in and the PF lights up like a Christmas tree.
Then she trips off again.
So i seperate the fuses and use the trip switch on both PF lamps and backbox, one by one. Pf lights up... backbox trips the switch.

Fault was always in the backbox... 3 lights work here and they must be sucking the juice as it burnt out a 20A fuse..... no PF lights was a different fault.

Anyway.. few alterations done in the back box too, so working on a hunch i disconnect the wire going to some newly and messily installed lamp sockets... hey presto!!! Game now works!!!
And what a cracker of a game COVER GIRL is.

Some minor tweeking and tuning to do, but essentally, a working game.

THE DEMON FAULT!!!

Repro PF... very very nice!

Game lit up...
